Salary: The previously determined range for this position was $38.26/hr to $85.82/hr*. Final rate offered will be determined by the collective bargaining agreement, internal salary equity, candidate experience and qualifications, and budget constraints. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a rate at or near the top of the full range for a position.

This position requires Illinois residency within 180 days of the hire date. (RNs only)

Position Summary

Staff Nurse II is accountable for the delivery of patient care utilizing the Nursing Process and Relationship-Based Care model as the framework. The Staff Nurse II provides direct patient care and takes initiative to improve patient outcomes by integrating Shared Leadership, Evidence Based Practice, Relationship Based Care and standards of nursing excellence into clinical practice. Through therapeutic relationships with patients, families, self and colleagues, the Staff Nurse II functions as an interdisciplinary team member who provides quality patient care and fulfills unit and organizational goals. Staff Nurse II facilitates educational development of staff, leads unit-based quality improvement initiatives and acts as a professional and clinical role model and educational resource for staff. Staff Nurse II is actively engaged in Shared Leadership through membership of a governing council.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Completes the required orientation program and unit-specific competencies.

  • Facilitates orientation and reorientation for new hires and current employees.

  • Develops, implements, and updates patients' plans of care based on ongoing assessments and input from patients and their families.

  • Share information and collaborate with other healthcare team members to promote effective patient care.

  • Verifies and implements orders from physicians, physician assistants, and/or advanced practice nurses by performing prescribed interventions and documenting accurately in the electronic medical record.

  • Engage with patients and their families to develop appropriate educational plans.

  • Recognizes symptoms, establishes priorities, and responds to patients' changing needs.

  • Engages support personnel by delegating appropriate tasks per the Illinois State Nurse Practice Act, providing support and feedback.

  • Demonstrates a commitment to UI Health's values through teamwork and effective communication to achieve quality outcomes, patient safety, customer satisfaction, and a clean, safe, and therapeutic environment.

  • Assumes role as Charge nurse as assigned, utilizing appropriate resources and tools. Acts as a resource for unit personnel and aids in resolving questions related to policy, standards and procedures.

  • Recognizes and addresses the clinical needs of staff in patient care delivery.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Advocates for patients, families, significant others, the community, and the nursing profession.

  • Integrates theoretical knowledge, evidence-based research, current standards of practice, and clinical experience to provide high-quality patient care, as measured by established nursing quality standards and other governing/accrediting healthcare bodies.

  • Utilizes the hospital-approved acuity tool and electronic scheduling tool to optimize staffing, scheduling, and patient assignments.

  • Recognizes and supports Shared Leadership as the chosen method of nursing governance.

  • Actively engages in Shared Leadership through membership of a governing council, supporting departmental and unit goals in daily activities.

  • Demonstrates accountability for job performance by (1) seeking opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge and (2) maintaining conditions of employment (RN licensure, BLS, ACLS, PALS, and other required unit-specific certifications).

  • Receives and provides feedback to healthcare team members regarding performance and practice.

  • Adheres to UI Health's Code of Conduct.

  • Treats patients, families, staff, students, and visitors with respect and dignity.

  • Follows nursing policies on time, overtime, and attendance.

  • Completes electronic learning modules and related programs assigned by UI Health by the established deadlines.

  • Complies with University Health Services TB, flu compliance, and fit-testing requirements.

  • Utilizes established communication channels/chain of command to escalate or resolve patient care issues.

  • Identifies recurring clinical practices and unit problems and participates in problem-solving and resolution.

  • Plans, presents and evaluates educational experiences for staff and students.

  • Serves as a preceptor and resource for other nursing staff and students.

  • In collaboration with the ANIII/CNCII, will lead unit-based quality initiatives and provide feedback and education to staff.

  • Accesses the medical center intranet for relevant communication and to review and interpret changes in policy, procedure, and other pertinent information.

  • Supports nursing and multidisciplinary research efforts conducted on the unit and at UI Health.

  • Take responsibility for continued professional growth and development by identifying learning needs and initiating strategies to address them.

  • Proactively serves as an agent of change, partnering with team members to identify, implement and sustain improvement to unit workflows and processes.

  • Proactively goes above and beyond expectations to support team and organizational goals.

  • Comply with University Health Services TB, flu compliance, and fit-testing requirements

    Minimum Qualifications

    1. Licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in Illinois with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Division of Professional Regulation.
    2. 5 Years of Nursing Experience Required
    • 2 years of Critical Care RN experience, Charge Nurse experience and Preceptor Experience
    • 2 years Adult and Pediatric Phase I Recovery, Phase II Recovery, and Pre-op Experience
    • ACLS, PALS, and BLS are required and must be maintained active as employment conditions.
    • Willing to achieve the CAPA and/or CPAN Certification after 2 years of Peri anesthesia care experience.
    • Excellent attendance, interpersonal skills and work history required.

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Proficient with Microsoft Office, with experience in creating PowerPoints, public presentations, and researching evidence-based research.
    • Experienced in leading staff meetings and delivering in-service training
    • Intermediate computer skills with the ability to become proficient in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) with on-the- job training.
    • Effective communication skills (oral and written) that facilitate therapeutic relationships between patients, family, and health care providers.
    • CAPA Certified
    • Critical Care or other Certification Preferred.
    • Bilingual
    • Pre-operative education and surgery experience
    • Quality improvement and presentation experience
