Overview

The Senior Specialist serves to develop and implement Industrial Hygiene initiatives on a company-wide basis. These initiatives include designing exposure assessments with input from senior staff, performing industrial hygiene measurement and assessment activities, as well as providing support and counsel in assigned safety and health-related subject matter areas. This individual applies strong leadership, interpersonal, technical and computer skills, along with written and verbal communication abilities to achieve required results and contribute to a positive, team-spirited, safe work culture.

Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities
  • Identify, plan, develop, and implement improvements to safety and industrial hygiene related process flow.
  • Assess, specify, and support procurement of chemical products, equipment, materials, and services as directed. Such activities include technical review of Safety Data Sheets (SDS), technical specifications, service contracts, purchase agreements, invoices and Environment, Health, and Safety Plans (eHASPs).
  • Perform and/or facilitate various sampling activities to assess chemical and physical hazards including but not limited to lead, mercury, noise, EMF, and indoor air quality-associated constituents.
  • Oversee and administer various aspects of the Hearing Conservation Program, including but not limited to tracking and management of audiogram compliance.
  • Review and update company safety and environmental procedures, instructions, specifications, and guidelines as assigned to reflect operational practices, regulatory changes, and as otherwise appropriate.
  • Assist in the review of vendor/contractor eHASPs as part of the company's Third-Party Risk Management (TPRM) program.
  • Prepare reports and supporting materials to communicate incident analyses, compliance trends, performance information, regulatory issues, and other assigned subjects.
  • Provide immediate response to incidents on a 24x7 basis in accordance with a duty schedule and initiate/support event-related analyses.
  • Demonstrate knowledge development in the company's energy commodity systems as well as the operating and maintenance processes, with emphasis on the associated industrial hygiene and safety aspects.

Qualifications

Required Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Industrial Hygiene/Safety, Science or a technical discipline and 3 years relevant work experience
Relevant Work Experience
  • 3-5 years Of experience in health and safety program development/management, operations leadership, and/or other technical discipline, required.
  • Functional expertise in the underlying regulatory bases and technical principles of Industrial Hygiene/safety-related procedures and instructions, required.
  • Understanding of root cause analysis techniques and data analysis principles, required.
  • Operational familiarity with the practices and requirements of Con Edison's service commodities, required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of industrial hygiene sampling principles, equipment, methods, and analytical approaches entailed with assessment of chemical and physical stressors, required.
  • Prior experience in Industrial Hygiene/safety-related subject matter areas, or working knowledge of associated Federal, State, and local requirements, preferred.
  • Experience with developing and executing exposure assessments, preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Other: Certified Industrial Hygienist or
  • Certified Safety Professional, preferred
Physical Demands
  • Ability to carry tools and materials when climbing ladders and scaffolds, and entering confined spaces
  • Ability to work on elevated platforms, scaffolds, catwalks, roofs, and/or other equipment
  • Ability to be approved to wear and use either a full or half-face respirator and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), without facial hair or other conditions that may interfere with the seal, in accordance with OSHA regulations
  • Wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), i.e. fire-retardant clothing and safety harnesses
Additional Physical Demands
  • The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must be able and willing to travel within Company service territory, as needed.
  • Maintain availability to support activities on a 24x7 basis, and in accordance with an established duty schedule.
  • Must be able to wear air-purifying and supplied-air respiratory protection.
