Product Development Test Engineer

Location: Allen Park, MI (Hybrid - 4 days onsite)

Pay: $42.31 per hour

Position Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled Product Development Test Engineer to support vehicle software development, validation, and release activities through hands-on management of a fleet of test vehicles. This role plays a critical part in ensuring vehicles are properly configured, updated, maintained, and operational to enable continuous software testing and delivery.

You'll collaborate closely with software engineers, test teams, technicians, and feature owners to diagnose complex vehicle and software issues, perform advanced root cause analysis, and improve operational efficiency through scripting, automation, and tooling.

This is an ideal role for engineers with experience in vehicle systems, embedded/software environments, test automation, and fleet operations.

Key Responsibilities

Vehicle & Fleet Operations



  • Manage and operate assigned test vehicles to support software validation and release milestones
  • Coordinate vehicle availability, sign-out/sign-in, configuration control, and usage across multiple engineering teams
  • Track vehicle status, location, usage, and health to ensure test readiness
  • Support audits and ensure compliance with fleet and vehicle policies


Vehicle Software & Configuration Management



  • Execute and manage vehicle software baselining across multiple ECUs
  • Perform OTA, service, manufacturing, and manual software updates
  • Verify software integrity, configuration accuracy, and system behavior post-update
  • Support software release readiness by validating baseline stability and vehicle operability


Maintenance & Diagnostics



  • Oversee preventive, corrective, and predictive maintenance for test vehicles
  • Support hardware, ECU, power, safety, and vehicle network systems
  • Quickly identify and resolve vehicle-related blockers impacting test execution


Scripting, Automation & Tool Development



  • Develop and maintain scripts and tools (primarily Python; C++, shell, or similar considered) to automate:

    • Vehicle auditing and health checks
    • Log and telemetry collection
    • DTC analysis and categorization
    • Dashboards, reporting, and operational workflows


  • Improve fleet utilization, reduce manual effort, and increase operational reliability through automation


Root Cause Analysis & Issue Resolution



  • Perform advanced root cause analysis for recurring vehicle faults, connectivity issues, and test failures
  • Analyze logs, diagnostics, CAN data, traces, and telemetry to isolate failures
  • Differentiate between software, hardware, and operational issues
  • Document findings and ensure defects are tracked and prioritized in JIRA or equivalent systems


Cross-Functional Collaboration



  • Partner with product, software, validation, and operations teams to align vehicle readiness with program milestones
  • Provide effort estimates during sprint planning for vehicle operations, software updates, and tooling tasks
  • Contribute to technical documentation, operational procedures, and best practices
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives related to vehicle management and software update reliability



Required Qualifications



  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Software Engineering, or related field
  • 3-5 years of experience in software engineering, automotive product development, vehicle software operations, or test systems
  • Hands-on experience managing test vehicles and executing vehicle software updates
  • Strong scripting and automation experience (Python preferred)
  • Proven ability to debug complex systems and perform advanced root cause analysis


Preferred Qualifications



  • Experience with Python or similar scripting languages
  • API integration and data parsing experience
  • Log analysis, diagnostics, and telemetry interpretation
  • Test automation frameworks and tooling development
  • .NET development experience (for internal tools, dashboards, or enterprise tooling)
  • Technical writing and process documentation experience
