About the Department and/or College

The School of Theatre & Dance is NAST and NASD accredited and offers the B.A. in Dance, B.A. in Theatre Arts; B.F.A. in Theatre Arts: acting, design, musical theatre; B.F.A. in Dance, M.A. in Dance Studies; M.A. in Theatre Arts; M.F.A. in Theatre Arts: Arts Administration, Playwriting, Design, and Performance and Pedagogy; Ph.D. in Fine Arts with a Track in Theatre. A faculty of 23 full-time professors serves approximately 140 undergraduate students and 60 graduate students. Technical and administrative support includes a total of 11 staff positions. The school's resources include a new state-of-the-art facility, the nationally renowned Marfa and WildWind Performance Lab programs.

Major/Essential Functions

The School of Theatre & Dance (SoTD), within the Texas Tech University J.T. & Margaret Talkington College of Visual & Performing Arts, seeks applications for a full-time 12-month staff Scenic Studio (shop) Supervisor.

  • Collaborate with School personnel to realize season productions.
  • Lead the construction and fabrication of scenic elements, including carpentry,
  • metalworking, rigging, automation, props, and scenic art.
  • Educate, train and supervise scenic employees and student crews according to industry, institutional and safety standards.
  • Tracks and report on the progress of the construction/implementation of scenic process.
  • Manage safe operations and maintains of all studio equipment and machinery.
  • Maintain and manage an organized inventory of materials, tools, equipment, and existing stock.
  • Attend and participate in season planning efforts, staff meetings, and other production related meetings.
  • Work with the department safety officer to adhere to all TTU and industry safety policies.
  • Periodically assist facilities manager with events in theatre and dance buildings.
  • Works on occasional evenings and weekend events.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree plus three years supervisory experience; OR a combination of education and/or supervisory experience to equal seven years.

Preferred Qualifications

Technical and Shop Skills:

  • Proficiency in scenic construction techniques, including woodworking, metalworking, and props construction.
  • Proficiency in safe rigging techniques and scenic automation.
  • Experience in programming and operation of digitally assisted fabrication, such as CNC, 3D printing, Laser Cutting, and/or other technologies.

Software and Digital Proficiency:
  • Proficiency in CAD programs, either VectorWorks or AutoCAD.
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office and Microsoft Teams.

Leadership and Management Experience:
  • Ability to work with other Production Departments, should have experience with conflict resolution techniques, personnel management, and best collaborative practices, and leadership.
  • One or more years of professional experience supervising or managing a scenic shop for live entertainment or educational environment.

Physical and Logistic Requirements:
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds, climb ladders and ability to perform at heights above 10 feet.
  • Must have a valid driver's license to transport scenic/props stock to and from storage.
  • Certification/Training in ETCP or OSHA standards.
