Pharmacy Technician

Under the direction of a staff nuclear pharmacist and/or nuclear pharmacy leadership team, follow established policies and procedures to perform a variety of routine support tasks that are integral to the operation of the BICOR program and Nuclear Pharmacy department. Tasks include, but are not limited to, preparing and distributing unit-dose radiopharmaceuticals while maintaining the safe handling and integrity of medications. Tasks may also include responsibilities of technical training and participation in departmental projects. Staffing assignments will include roles throughout the Nuclear Pharmacy & BICOR PET drug manufacturing program.
For Uncertified Pharmacy Technicians, the certification is preferred within the initial six (6) months of employment. The certification must be obtained before the end of the six-month timeframe.

Essential Functions
-Perform all required pharmaceutical dosage calculations necessary to prepare extemporaneous dosage forms as applicable under the direct supervision of a pharmacist.
-Adhere to safety requirements for handling radiopharmaceuticals in accordance with organizational policies and regulatory requirements.
-May prepare compounded sterile products using principles of aseptic technique. May distribute and transport controlled substances under the appropriate state of control.
-Performs daily quality control testing on prepared radiopharmaceuticals and associated instrumentation.
-Handles various physical forms of radiopharmaceuticals and radioactive sources containing large quantities of radioactivity, including kits, unit-doses, and isotope generators.
-Receive, check, store, label, package, and transport all radioactive material in accordance with NRC, DOT, MADPH regulations, and BWH Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
-Maintains clean, organized, and safe work areas inside a cleanroom environment used for aseptic processing.
-Assists in the maintenance of computerized inventory and billing information including data entry and retrieval.
-Perform routine, periodic floor inspections of materials handling areas to maintain the organization and adequate stock of medications and supplies in BICOR/Nuclear Pharmacy areas.
-Maintains records on facility maintenance, instrument calibrations/maintenance, radioisotope receipts, inventory, shipments, quality control, laboratory surveys, institutional permits, personnel exposure, and disposal.
-Assists in, resolves, and/or initiates invoices, work orders, and purchase order requisitions essential to the operation of the pharmacy and BICOR facility.
-Maintains strong familiarity with pharmacy practice requirements in a sterile cleanroom, legal requirements and limitations, prescription information and calculations, drug identification and generic equivalents, drug manufacturing, packaging and labeling information, and proper drug handling and storage practices.

  • Pharmacy Technician [State License] - required

  • Pharmacy Technician Certification [CPhT] - Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) preferred

Experience

  • Previous hospital-related experience, formal training, or certification from a pharmacy technician training program is desired 1-2 years required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • The ability to read, interpret and follow complicated verbal and written instructions precisely.

  • Ability to work with sustained attention and care on routine repetitive tasks.

  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations.

  • Above average communication skills and knowledge of Pharmacy policies and procedures is essential.

  • Must be able to work accurately under stress with time constraints.

  • Ability to perform in a professional and courteous manner and maintain working relationships with Physicians, Nuclear Medicine Technologists, Pharmacists and other health care professionals.

  • Understanding medical terminology, abbreviations and computer operation.

  • Time management and organizational skills to handle multiple tasks under time constraints.

  • Ability to organize and maintain efficient work areas and services.

  • Ability to make decisions based on knowledge of procedural requirements of the work in conjunction with specific skills and abilities of the technician.

  • Ability to distinguish routine functions from those requiring a Pharmacist's professional judgement.

  • Ability to spend most of the work time standing or walking in order to complete daily tasks.

  • Ability to lift heavy loads sometimes required setting up and filling medication supply orders.

  • Ability to acquire skills necessary in operation of Pharmacy equipment.
