About the Job

In this role, the postdoc will work on the genetic design and characterization of microbial systems aimed at controlling the formation of synthetic biofilms for biotechnological applications. The project will involve research at the intersections of biological and (bio)chemical engineering, synthetic biology and materials sciences.

80 % Conduct and Design Experiments
Independently conduct and design molecular, genetic engineering, biochemical and biophysical and computational experiments aimed at the creation & analysis of engineered synthetic biofilms and microbially derived systems and materials. Specific techniques involved include for example, molecular and synthetic biology methods, biochemical and biophysical methods, protein design, engineering and purification, strain engineering and microscopy (fluorescent, TEM, SEM, AFM) and analytical methods (HPLC, GC, rheology) and/or computational analysis/modelling of biological systems.

10 % Prepare Results for Publication and Presentation
The results of the project will be published in major journals in the field and presented at national and international meetings. This position will require data compilation and figure preparation that will be incorporated into manuscripts to be written and submitted for publication as well as posters and oral presentations.

5 % Archive Data and Materials
Archive all experiments performed in the course of the study, as well as the generated reagents in accordance to lab convention. All strains, DNA constructs and reagents are to be maintained, with a full record of the work.

5 % Routine laboratory maintenance
Assist in maintaining a ready supply of strains, solutions, chemicals, and various lab reagents to ensure efficient functioning of the lab.

Qualifications

Required:
Ph.D. in molecular biology, biotechnology, microbiology, biochemistry, or related fields is required. Extensive experience in molecular techniques (genetic and genome engineering), microbiology and quantitative/computational analysis is essential, and a demonstrated ability to independently design and carry out research projects and publish research results in a timely fashion.

Preferred:
Ph.D. in molecular biology, biotechnology, microbiology, biochemistry, or related fields is required. Extensive experience in molecular techniques (genetic and genome engineering), microbiology and quantitative/computational analysis is essential, and a demonstrated ability to independently design and carry out research projects and publish research results in a timely fashion.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $61,008; depending on education/qualifications/experience
