Job Summary

Access Services Department consists of three areas: Emergency Registration, Admissions and 48X. This position description describes those duties performed by the Senior Access Representative. Senior Access Representatives are responsible for sustaining professionalism in which to provide his/her assigned patient population all essential non-medical assistance while completing the following function for all scheduled admissions and unscheduled admissions; patient reception, registration, insurance verification, payor notification, authorization verification, collection of patient payment, patient intake, and referral to financial agencies/officials. Incumbents are expected to adhere to the established protocols of UCDHS, Finance Division, and departmental policy and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position.

  • High school diploma or equivalent work experience / training
  • Registration/Admitting/Scheduling Experience in a Hospital Setting
  • Cash Handling/Patient Liability Collection Experience
  • Experience Working in EPIC or other Electronic Health Record
  • Previous Insurance Eligibility Experience
  • Ability to organize and prioritize assignments to complete work in a timely and efficient manner, particularly when there are changes in workload or assignment.
  • Problem solving skills to identify and define a problem; identify resources available to help solve the problem; create viable solutions and take the action necessary to implement them in cooperation with the Supervisor; follow through to ensure the problem is resolved to the satisfaction of all parties.
  • Proficiently operates computer systems, including DDE, MC00, HDX, AEVS used for registration and verification.
  • Ability to accept and follow direction from Supervisor; work as part of a team that share a common goal, in support of UCDHS mission statement.
  • Ability to make independent judgment within established guidelines.
  • Ability to accomplish a variety of concurrent assignments in an effective and efficient manner.
  • Ability to remain flexible and adaptable to changes in policies and procedures
  • Maintain in depth knowledge of healthcare insurance systems, including but not limited to Medi-Cal, Medicare, HMO, PPO, fee-for-service, and worker's compensation to correctly assign payor plan code, coordinate eligibility, benefits, authorizations, and explain policies and requirements to patients.
  • Written and oral communication skills that clearly and concisely provide information, explanations, and instructions and to elicit information from others with varying levels of ability to understand, including individuals who are ill or distressed.
  • Interpersonal skills to establish and maintain a friendly, collaborative environment; to maintain a courteous and calm demeanor.
  • Read and comprehend documents written in standard English text including memos, forms, and administrative policy manuals.
  • Basic understanding of diagnosis (ICD-9) and procedure (CPT-4) codes.
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology sufficient to communicate appropriately with patients, health care providers, and payors.
  • Keyboarding skills to effectively operate computer terminal, P.C.; ability to easily read computer screen.
  • Maintain work station in a clean, organized manner; restocks with supplies as needed
  • Report equipment malfunctions and makes arrangements for repair. when appropriate.
  • Filing skills to accurately maintain alpha/numerical files.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience working a variable work schedule (after hours, weekends, holiday)
  • Intermediate Computer Skills
  • State/County Insurance Plan Knowledge

Work Environment

UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014.
