Engineering Intern

The Intern position is an opportunity for an Engineering student to gain real-world experience in an aerospace manufacturing environment, while concurrently providing benefit to Engineering by performing a variety of engineering tasks in either the Project or Manufacturing Engineering areas.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Communicates with customers by requesting for quotes, contracts, purchase orders, electronic or hard copy drawings, and specifications.
  • Creates quotation packages, documents, drawings, and processes for the purpose of meeting customer requirements.
  • Supports the Project and/or Design Engineers, Manufacturing Engineering, and Operations with the implementation of quotations that are awarded to the company.
  • Works cooperatively as a member of an Integrated Product Team (IPT) that includes Engineering, Quality, Contracts, Finance, and Supply Chain personnel.
  • Utilizes CAD/3D software and CATIA.
  • Creates and manipulates spreadsheet packages using Excel.
  • Understands manufacturing processes especially as they relate to sheet metal, tooling, fixtures, jigs and assembly and integrates that knowledge into process flow and tool design assistance.
  • Reads and has a thorough understanding of Engineering Drawings and associated Parts Lists.
  • Plans, creates, and maintains manufacturing operations to facilitate production of sheet metal parts and Bill of Materials.
  • Updates planning as required for all purchase order/customer engineering changes or for all method improvement/correction type changes.
  • Assists project engineers in coordinating with customer and supplier engineers to ensure that all data, information, drawings, and other necessary information is available to build quality parts.
  • Writes detailed Statement of Work (SOW) that accurately defines the activities to be performed by suppliers.
  • Assists the Quality representative to develop a quality assurance/inspection plan for each part and Assembly.
  • Incorporates appropriate tolerances and specifications into all planning documents as described by the Purchase Order and Engineering Drawings.
  • Assists in writing detailed work instructions to accomplish job in a safe and satisfactory manner.
  • Coordinates the necessary information with other engineers to make corrections or improvements to planning, tooling, programs, or processes.
  • Develops Standard Operating Procedures utilizing drawings and specifications as well as interviews with operators.
  • Participates in improvement activities with Manufacturing Engineer and Work Center Managers to support manufacturing operations.
  • Collects data and analyzes continuous improvement of production processes.
  • Proposes process changes to improve quality and/or throughput.
  • Performs other duties as required.

  • Current undergraduate student majoring in Engineering, with an emphasis on Aerospace, Mechanical, Systems, Process, or another related field.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret scientific and technical data, blueprints, specifications, etc.
  • Ability to effectively present information to peers and management.
  • Ability to apply advanced mathematical and statistical concepts.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively.
  • The employee frequently is required to stand; the employee is occasionally required to walk and sit.
  • Must be able to occasionally move and/or lift from up to 25 pounds.

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job. Safety glasses, safety shoes and other designated personal protective equipment as required for the position.

  • Working conditions are: 50% office and 50% manufacturing environment.
  • Safety glasses (ANSI Z87 compliant) required in all manufacturing areas.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme heat; and risk of electrical shock.
  • The noise level in the work environment is moderate and occasionally loud.
  • Hearing protection is required in designated areas.
  • Fully enclosed leather construction safety shoes (ANSI Z-41 compliant) must be worn in all manufacturing areas.

Pay rate: $21.00/hour
