Position Overview

The Heavy Civil Marine Surveyor is responsible for providing precise surveying and layout control for marine and heavy civil infrastructure projects, including bridges, piers, docks, bulkheads, cofferdams, and other waterfront or overwater structures. This role ensures that all field work is performed accurately, efficiently, and safely to support construction activities on land and water.

Key Responsibilities




  • Perform topographic, hydrographic, and construction layout surveys for marine and heavy civil projects.
  • Establish and maintain horizontal and vertical control points on land and over water.
  • Conduct pre-construction, as-built, and progress surveys for structural components.
  • Use GPS, robotic total stations, and hydrographic equipment to collect and process survey data.
  • Prepare survey reports, drawings, and electronic data files for use by engineers, superintendents, and project management.
  • Coordinate with engineers and superintendents to verify layout requirements, elevations, and tolerances.
  • Monitor and verify construction alignment, elevation, and position of marine structures to ensure compliance with design drawings.
  • Work closely with pile driving and marine crews to provide real-time layout and verification during installation.
  • Assist in survey planning for barges, crane positioning, and marine foundation work.
  • Maintain and calibrate survey instruments, GPS base stations, and hydrographic sensors.
  • Ensure all survey work complies with company safety procedures, quality standards, and environmental regulations.
  • Support project documentation, including daily survey logs and as-built data submissions.



Minimum Qualifications




  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in surveying for heavy civil or marine construction projects.
  • Strong knowledge of construction layout, GPS, total station, and level operation.
  • Experience with marine and overwater survey methods, including pile positioning, barge alignment, and hydrographic data collection.
  • Experience supporting pile driving, cofferdam, and marine concrete operations.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D, Trimble Business Center, or similar survey processing software.
  • Understanding of engineering plans, specifications, and tolerances in marine environments.
  • Ability to work from barges, boats, and overwater structures safely and efficiently.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Valid TWIC card and OSHA 10/30 certification preferred.
  • Associate or Bachelor's degree in Surveying, Civil Engineering, or related field preferred (or equivalent field experience).
