Position Overview

The Crew Boat Pilot is responsible for safely operating and maintaining company vessels used to transport personnel, equipment, and materials to and from marine construction sites. This role supports heavy civil and marine construction projects such as bridge, pier, dock, and dredging operations. The pilot ensures compliance with all safety, environmental, and maritime regulations while maintaining efficiency in daily marine operations.

Key Responsibilities




  • Safely operate crew boats, tugboats, or other small vessels to transport personnel, tools, and materials between shore and job sites.
  • Maintain vessel readiness through routine inspections, fueling, and light maintenance (engine checks, fluid levels, etc.).
  • Assist in the loading and unloading of equipment and materials as needed.
  • Navigate safely in various weather and marine conditions while adhering to Coast Guard and company safety standards.
  • Maintain accurate vessel logs including fuel usage, maintenance records, and crew manifests.
  • Communicate effectively with project management, marine crews, and shore support to coordinate vessel movements.
  • Support construction crews with on-water operations such as positioning barges, setting anchors, and assisting in pile driving or dredging activities.
  • Monitor and report any vessel damage, hazards, or safety concerns immediately.
  • Comply with all environmental protection requirements related to marine operations.
  • Participate in safety meetings, training, and emergency drills as required.



Minimum Qualifications




  • Minimum 2-3 years of experience operating vessels in a marine construction, dredging, or similar heavy civil marine environment.
  • Strong knowledge of navigation, maritime rules, and Coast Guard regulations.
  • Ability to perform minor mechanical repairs and maintenance on marine engines and systems.
  • Excellent situational awareness and communication skills.
  • Ability to work long hours in varying weather conditions.
  • Commitment to safety and teamwork on active construction sites.



Preferred Qualifications




  • Experience operating vessels around barges, cranes, and pile driving equipment.
  • Familiarity with inland waterways, ports, or coastal marine construction operations.
  • Basic knowledge of rigging, anchor handling, or deckhand duties.
