Job Summary

The Retention Coach is critical in fostering student success by providing individualized academic guidance, proactive support, and resource connections to empower students to achieve their educational, personal, and professional goals. This position is central to the college's mission by creating a student-centered environment designed to orient and transition new college students and retain them beyond the first year by prioritizing individualized success strategies, persistence and academic excellence to improve their success and lead to degree completion.
The position provides supportive functions and operations to identified first-year student success programs to achieve metrics in an effort to reduce new student melt and increase student engagement through degree completion. Facilitates the process of exploring and developing skills, helps students to identify and overcome obstacles that impede academic success and foster the development of behaviors and habits that contribute to college success and beyond. These include academic goal setting, learning and study strategies, time management and organization, self-regulation and self-efficacy. The position has a particular focus on implementing long-range strategies from a strategic enrollment management lens to address enrollment trends and track student persistence that support first-year retention and degree completion. More specifically, the Retention Coach will have a dual role in assisting with student outreach to encourage re-enrollment and once enrolled to provide holistic case management for first-year completion and preparation for the second year. In the process of encouraging students to re-enroll and complete their education, the Retention Coach will identify barriers that previously impacted the student's persistence and assist the student with eliminating these barriers. In addition, the position will also provide some holistic case management to students who enroll; track student academic progress, and proactively intervening as necessary. The position will also serve as a resource, connecting students to academic support, advising, career advising, financial aid, health & wellness services, and providing information needed to be informed on the support services students can utilize. Additionally, the Retention Coach will provide academic advising during peak registration periods to support retention, persistence, and completion, by identifying students who are not registered for classes in the following term.

Essential Functions

30% Retention Coaching
* Coach and guide first-year students through their transition to college and support and monitor academic, personal, and social opportunities, major requirements and success strategies. Advise students on first-year course selection and assist with registrations.
* Proactively connect students with departments and college/community resources in an effort to create solutions for at-risk students and those facing academic, personal and social difficulties.
* Develop and implement effective personalized academic success plans tailored to student unique goals, strengths, and challenges.
* Guide students in selecting courses, understanding degree requirements, and developing long-term academic and career plans.
* Educate students on transfer pathways and explore workforce opportunities.
* Track and monitor student academic progress and maintain accurate student outreach records and other interactions utilizing technology and systems.
* Develop and maintain meaningful relationships with students, fostering a sense of belonging and accountability for their educational journey.
* Implement effective retention strategies to retain students, specifically first-year and other students.
* Assist students in setting academic and career goals.
* Help students navigate course selection, registration, and academic policies.
* Support students in developing study skills, time management, and self-advocacy.

* Connect with students and families over the summer in an effort to ensure students are prepared for the fall, answering questions on concerns including, but not limited to, course schedules and locations, purchasing books and materials, obtaining employment and addressing billing and financial aid concerns.
* Embed learning opportunities to develop student self-advocacy skills and foster autonomy.

30% Early Alert and Student Support
* Use the full functionality of the early alert system to maintain information regarding student appointments, alerts, progress surveys, and other necessary information adhering to data integrity standards.
Assist with monitoring the early alert system for first-year students and implement interventions to promote retention.
Provide monthly/semester reports to the Director, Academic Advising/Assistant Director, First-Year Success regarding at-risk students
* Monitor academic performance and flag early signs of academic distress.
* Monitor and respond to the early alert flags for assigned students at risk and implement interventions to promote retention.
* Provide outreach to students who miss classes or fall behind.
* Collaborate with faculty to receive alerts on at-risk students.
* Monitor student progress, identify at-risk students, and develop and implement timely intervention strategies and support services to ensure students remain on track to complete their first-year education.
Help students to identify, develop, and implement learning strategies and study skills specific to course materials.
Monitor college retention, persistence, and graduation rates for undergraduates, including subsets for comparison to the general population (e.g., 2+2, Pell-grant recipients, underrepresented minorities, First Gen, etc.)
* Support students under Academic Review after their student status is no longer in "Good Standing."
* Implement timely interventions to prevent withdrawal or failure.
* Collaborate with campus departments to connect students with academic, career, wellness, and social support services to remove barriers to success.

15% Program and Event Coordination
* Assist in the development of New Student Orientation, peer mentoring and first-year experience programs.
* Plan and facilitate workshops on topics like goal setting, study skills, and resilience.
* Assist with planning, organizing, and facilitating retention events, program sessions, and special events to promote the educational transition and awareness for new students, especially for at-risk student populations.
* Facilitate workshops, seminars, and events that enhance academic skills, support career readiness, and empower students.
* Conduct one-on-one advising sessions, group workshops, and orientation programs to support student transition and engagement.
* Prepare and conduct well-organized presentations, class discussions, and activities on various topics.
* Work with faculty, staff, and administrators to promote a student-centered environment.
* Contribute to developing initiatives that address equity gaps and improve student retention and graduation rates.
* Participate in pre-registration for fall/spring courses, and assistance in making changes to schedules.
* Partner with faculty, staff, and administrators to develop, promote, evaluate and revise coordinated and student-centered approaches and programs.
* Utilize diverse technology and tracking systems, data collection, and analysis.
Collect and analyze advising effectiveness and retention trends data to inform continuous improvement efforts.
* Stay current with best practices in academic advising, student development, and retention strategies through professional development opportunities.

15% Data Tracking, Reporting and Compliance
* Ensure compliance and follow, understand, and adhere to federal, state, District Office, and institutional regulations/laws/policies.
* Maintain accurate and complete student records as required by accreditation agencies, school policies, and administrative regulations.
* Utilize relevant, appropriate, and approved systems to communicate and monitor student interaction and progress.

* Maintain accurate records and track student outcomes using advising technologies.

* Contribute to and support strategic enrollment planning activities, and in partnership with administration, implementing SEM planning.
* Collaborate with administration to analyze, interpret and implement processes as they relate to student engagement, retention, persistence, academic advising, and student success.
* Develop metrics, policies, and procedures and program health assessment for establishing and achieving objectives in retention, persistence, and student success.
Develop and utilize a robust data strategy and other technological advances to create a model retention program for in-person and online students.
Demonstrate initiative working collaboratively and cooperatively with colleagues to contribute to the development of student retention strategies and provide periodic analysis of impact.
Serve as the primary liaison for proactive and relational advising and outreach initiatives in partnership with and support of institutional academic, student success, and advising staff.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree from a regionally accredited institution and two (2) years of student services or college teaching experience, or experience coordinating, administering, planning, or evaluating programs.

OR

An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.

Desired Qualifications

A Completed Master's degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling, or related field from a regionally accredited institution from a regionally accredited institution
B Minimum of 3 years' experience in effective retention coaching, academic advising, student support services, case management or related areas in higher education work experience, including ability to articulate components of effective retention practices and student success strategies
C Demonstrated success in implementing student-centered advising strategies that improved retention and persistence rates
D Appreciative Advising certification and/or training
E Experience with PeopleSoft, case management, and advising tools
F Proficiency in using Google and Microsoft products such as Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint
G Experience in applying student development theories and conducting data analysis to inform and enhance student success initiatives, supported by quantitative or qualitative data
H Proficient in English and a second language. Bilingual (Spanish fluency)

Special Working Conditions

Work schedule varies during the year: August through mid-May: Monday - Friday, 8 hour days; mid-May through the end of July: Monday - Thursday, 10 hour days
