Position Description

As the largest division within Outreach & Engagement, the Museum at Texas Tech University is in a major growth phase for engagement and educational programming capacity. Reporting to the Executive Director of the Museum at Texas Tech University (in regard to the Museum's Education Division administration and museum outreach and engagement programming) and the Vice Provost of Outreach and Engagement (in regard to faculty responsibilities and O&E programming requirements), the Director of Education and Engagement and Assistant Professor of Practice will oversee engagement programming, engaged research, and engagement partnerships associated with the Museum at Texas Tech University. This position will assist in making sure that outreach and engagement programming conducted by the Museum meets O&E requirements. In addition, the Director of Education and Engagement will submit and oversee new engaged research grants and coordinate the development of new programmatic engagement pathways with the Museum. The position leads a division that has a team of four full-time staff employees and a graduate student intern and has two direct reports: a Helen DeVitt Jones Curator of Education and a Museum Outreach & Engagement Liaison. The position will also teach four (6-week) micro-credential courses each academic year.

While appointed to this position, you will accrue vacation and will be required to report leave monthly following TTU's Operating Policy 70.01 and TTU System Regulation 07.12. The Office of Outreach and Engagement promotes and supports faculty, staff, and student engagement with communities by creating connections between scholarly pursuits and community needs, fostering mutually beneficial partnerships between the university and the community, and communicating best practices in outreach and engaged scholarship. There are several divisions affiliated with the Office of Outreach and Engagement including the Museum at Texas Tech, the National Ranching Heritage Museum, Lubbock Lake Landmark, Texas Tech University Press, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, Texas Tech University Center at Junction, and the Natural Science Research Laboratory. In addition to these divisions, the Office of Outreach and Engagement also offers numerous opportunities for faculty, staff, students, and community members to deepen their understanding of engagement and build partnerships.

The MaTTU was established in 1929 and includes nearly 200,000 square feet of enclosed space. The Museum is a multi-disciplinary institution that includes active collecting and research in anthropology, art, clothing & textiles, history, the natural sciences, and paleontology. The Museum includes the main museum building on 4th Street (Lubbock, Texas), the Lubbock Lake Landmark (LLL), and the Natural Science Research Laboratory (NSRL). With a staff of more than 50, the Museum sees on average over 160,000 visitors and participants per year. The MaTTU also houses the nationally recognized Heritage and Museum Sciences Master of Arts Program, which is educating the next generation of museum professionals.

Major/Essential Functions

Teaching (0.2 FTE)

  • Spring: 2 micro-credential (6-week) courses
  • Fall: 2 micro-credential (6-week) courses
  • Be a mentoring and active participating resource for graduate students conducting engagement activities under the auspices of (or in collaboration with) the Museum, with the potential to also co-chair graduate students involved with the MaTTU.
Engaged Research (0.50 FTE)
  • Publish engaged research and oversee engaged research partnerships of the Museum at Texas Tech University.
  • Attend and present research at conferences, symposia, etc.
  • Write grants focused on (and to assist) engagement efforts across the six collection/research divisions, exhibitions, and education.
Administration (0.30 FTE)
  • Oversee engagement programming and partnerships of the Museum at Texas Tech University.
  • Oversee the Museum's Education Division and with two direct reports: Helen DeVitt Jones Curator of Education and Museum Outreach & Engagement Liaison.
  • Oversees and directs strategic growth and execution of programming on behalf of the Museum at Texas Tech University.
  • Serve as a resource and point of contact for TTU faculty.
  • Serve as a member of the Executive Director's leadership team and as an advisor to the Executive Director. Serve on committees, working groups, and projects that the Executive Director assigns and represent the MaTTU at events.

Required Qualifications

Faculty Qualifications


  • A terminal degree (Ed.D., Ph.D., or M.F.A.).
  • Four years of experience developing or managing programs or projects.
  • Record of scholarship commensurate with rank.
  • Research agenda focused on a facet of community or cultural engagement.

Preferred Qualifications

In addition to the required qualifications, individuals with the following preferred qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply:

  • Three or more years of experience of working in a museum or cultural institution.
  • Three or more years of management experience.
  • Experience teaching in an online learning environment.
  • Active engagement in professional organizations in the field of museums and/or engaged scholarship.
  • Experience collaborating with community partners.
