In-office Requirement - One day per work week



Purpose: The VPD Education Coordinator is responsible for the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the overall health education and communication strategy for the Division of Immunization at the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. Under the direction of the Division Director, this position will work closely with a broad range of leadership, staff, and partners to ensure effective education and communication with providers, parents, and the public. The person in this position is responsible for development and dissemination of content across a range of mediums, including the Division's website, social media, press releases and broad public campaigns. The VPD Education Coordinator will also lead planning, coordinating, and facilitating annual immunization conferences and webinars.



Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Lead development, implementation, and evaluation of division health education and communications strategy in alignment with bureau, administration, and department plans and priorities.
  • Work closely with division and bureau staff, as well as internal and external partners, to identify opportunities for expanded community engagement in the development of health education plans and activities.
  • Identify opportunities for alignment of communications strategy and activities across existing and potential partnerships.
  • Review, develop, and design content for the Division website, assuring that materials are up to date and comply with State of Michigan accessibility standards.
  • Promote consumer education through the development of information related to immunizations and vaccine preventable diseases for health care providers, parents, and the general public.
  • Work with management to provide education and other relevant communications during outbreaks of vaccine preventable diseases or other relevant emergencies and support division staffing, as needed.



Education: Possession of a bachelor's degree in Health Communications, Public Health, Public Administration, or related field.



Experience: Two or more years of professional experience with demonstrated increasing responsibility in public health, health education, communications, project management, or program evaluation preferred.

  • Ability to translate highly technical information and data into effective communication materials for lay audiences.
  • Moderate to advanced knowledge of risk and crisis communication.
  • Ability to effectively communicate the impact of structural and social determinants of health on individual and population level health outcomes through a variety of mediums and engage communities most impacted in the development and design of health education materials.
  • Ability to develop and maintain relationships with partners with a wide variety of backgrounds and priorities.
  • Strong organizational skills, focused attention to detail, accuracy and efficiency.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate the work of others.
  • Ability to prioritize and coordinate multiple facets of project development, implementation, and management.
  • Ability to anticipate and independently resolve barriers and challenges with continuous improvement focus.
  • Proven exceptional oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to organize, evaluate, and present information effectively.
  • Ability to be flexible with changing deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and familiarity with email/internet browser software.
  • Competency in Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, or other graphic design software.



Work Environment and Physical Requirements: Must have reliable home internet connection. A valid vehicle operator's license to attend off-site/in-person meetings, conferences, and trainings. Viewing a CRT or VDT screen over 75% of the time. Position may occasionally require work outside of normal business hours.



RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE WORK OF OTHERS: No assigned responsibility.



IMPACT ON PROJECTS, SERVICES AND OPERATIONS: This position has a direct impact on the quality of services provided by MPHI to MDHHS. The Health Educator is a key member of the State's response to infectious disease threats. The candidate will provide support to internal and external partners, as well as staff at all levels of the Division. The position will help ensure that the best evidence-based practices are being implemented across all Division programs to help protect the health of Michigan residents.
