Position Summary
Under minimal supervision, manages the international services function which provides advice and counsel to international staff and faculty and internal consulting to academic management staff.

Duties & Responsibilities

Operations and Administration
  • Coach, mentor and train international services advising staff on work assignments, objectives, problem resolution and personal and team development.
  • Oversee and supervise the employment based immigration support services of the university's international employee population.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of programs and policies and develop new plans or procedures consistent with regulatory compliance, emerging trends and efficient departmental operations.
  • Liaise with external groups including the Department of Homeland Security, Social Security Administration, Department of Labor, Department of Motor Vehicles, and the Department of State to resolve issues or provide and receive information.
  • Ensure institutional compliance with employment based immigration regulations.
  • Responsible for reviewing, preparing and interpreting immigration documents, letters, and regulations for the hiring of international faculty and staff. Prepare for filing H-1B, E-3, TN, O-1, and employment based permanent residency petitions.
  • Make appropriate referrals for international faculty and scholar related to personal matters.
  • Advise international employees regarding federal policies and best practice considerations related to international travel.

Internal Consulting
  • Coach, counsel and assist academic department management, staff, and faculty on immigration regulations and procedures and recommended course of action.
  • Advise and counsel international staff and faculty on regulatory and administrative issues related their immigration status including: immigration and visa procedures, maintaining legal status, employment status, extension of stay, change of status, cultural and financial needs, travel regulations, etc.

Activities and Programs
  • Oversee the development of orientation programs, immigration seminars, workshops and social activities and events.

Training & Staff Management
  • Plan, assign and review work of staff to ensure that group objectives are met.
  • Hire, train, develop and manage staff to ensure that a qualified staff exists to meet group objectives.

Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in social sciences, humanities or a related field required.

Minimum of five years experience is required.

Strong knowledge of immigration laws, regulations and procedures.
Ability to meet both the USDHS's regulatory requirements to be a Designated School Official (F-1 program) and the U.S. Department of State's J-1 Visitor Program as an Alternate Responsible Officer.

Knowledge of both the Department of Homeland Security's SEVIS system and the Department of Labor's FLAG system.

Effective leadership and management skills and the ability to communicate effectively with people from various cultural backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree in higher education, international studies or a related field preferred.
Working knowledge of H-1B, TN, LPR, O-1 and J-1 processes.
Strong analytical skills, the ability to comprehend and synthesize various regulations, and the ability to resolve complex immigration problems.
