Overview:
The Workers' Compensation Exposure Specialist plays a key role in supporting Mercy's workers' compensation program and ensuring the health and safety of our co-workers across all locations. This position combines traditional workers' compensation coordination with specialized oversight of exposures to blood, body fluids, communicable diseases, and environmental hazards. The specialist will guide local teams, ensure regulatory compliance, and drive continuous improvement in exposure management.

Key Responsibilities
  • Identify and assess co-worker exposures to blood, body fluids, communicable diseases, and environmental factors across Mercy locations.
  • Provide guidance to local coordinators based on medical provider instructions, including patient testing, co-worker lab work, preventive medications, environmental assessments, counseling, education, and follow-up.
  • Develop and deliver educational materials and presentations to promote safety awareness and proper exposure reporting.
  • Analyze exposure data and present trends to leadership, using insights to collaborate on risk reduction strategies and ensure OSHA compliance.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) on exposure-related topics, participating in committees focused on needlesticks, infectious disease, infection prevention, and safety.
  • Lead team reviews of open exposure claims to ensure accurate documentation, timely lab work, and appropriate follow-up, providing re-education as needed.
  • Maintain and update exposure policies and procedures in alignment with CDC, OSHA, Joint Commission, and other regulatory guidelines.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support the workers' compensation and exposure management programs.
Qualifications
  • Education: High School diploma or GED required.
  • Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience in Workers' Compensation or related field.
