We have an exciting new opportunity to join Symetra as a Application Development Manager.

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Application Development Manager to lead the day-to-day management of our DevOps/Engineering Platforms team. This team empowers engineering across the enterprise by delivering scalable, secure, and compliant platforms that enable modern software delivery practices. The Application Development Manager will provide people leadership, operational oversight, and delivery coordination, working closely with the Product Manager to maintain the team's backlog and roadmap.

This role balances engineering leadership with operational excellence, ensuring the team consistently delivers value while fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

What you'll do



  • Provide coaching, mentoring, and career development for engineers, ensuring growth and engagement.
  • Conduct regular 1:1s, performance reviews, and goal-setting aligned with organizational priorities.
  • Build a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous learning.
  • Manage daily team operations, including sprint planning, workload balancing, and removing delivery blockers.
  • Partner with the Product Manager to groom and prioritize the backlog, ensuring roadmap alignment.
  • Track and report on key delivery metrics (e.g., throughput, deployment frequency, platform adoption).
  • Ensure adherence to engineering best practices, including CI/CD, infrastructure-as-code, observability, and secure coding standards.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Engineering to translate long-term platform strategy into actionable team goals.
  • Work closely with the Product Manager to align sprint commitments with business value delivery.
  • Partner with security, compliance, and infrastructure teams to ensure platforms meet enterprise standards.
  • Support the rollout of new tools, processes, and platforms across the engineering organization

Compensation
Salary Range: $125,300 - $208,400 plus eligibility for annual bonus program.

Who you are



  • 5+ years of experience in software engineering, DevOps, or platform engineering roles.
  • 2+ years of leadership experience (team lead, manager, or equivalent).
  • Strong understanding of DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, cloud infrastructure, observability, and modern engineering platforms.
  • Demonstrated success in managing technical teams and delivering complex initiatives.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to engage stakeholders at multiple levels.
  • Experience in a regulated industry (e.g., financial services, insurance, healthcare).
  • Familiarity with ITIL processes (Change/Release Management) and compliance-driven engineering.
  • Hands-on experience with tools such as GitHub Enterprise, Azure DevOps, Datadog, Kubernetes, and managed file transfer platforms.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a track record of driving efficiency and reducing toil.
