As the key leader in maintaining and operating the South Pole research station in Antarctica, you'll oversee a campus of multiple buildings with a population of up to 150 personnel during the summer and 45 during the winter. Your leadership in the Operations departments will ensure the delivery of critical services that impact every station area and all personnel.

Deployment to South Pole Station, Antarctica is required of this position annually for a time period of 4 to 5 months. Eligibility for deployment will require physical and dental evaluations with parameters determined by the National Science Foundation (NSF).

About the Antarctic Support Contract:

Leidos Antarctic Support Contract (ASC) is the prime contractor to the National Science Foundation (NSF) in support of the United States Antarctic Program (USAP). Leidos supports the NSF's Office of Polar Program's Antarctic Infrastructure and Logistics by aligning with their Mission and Vision Statements:

  • Vision:Expanding our scientific reach in Antarctica through increased operational and logistical effectiveness.

  • Mission:To provide the operational and logistical platform necessary for the U.S. to conduct world-class science in Antarctica and maintain its active and influential presence on the continent.

Leidos ASC provides science and logistics support for approximately 150 science and technical events across three geographically remote research stations; McMurdo Station, Palmer Station, and South Pole Station and several deep field sites across Antarctica. Each station or field site supports world class research across multiple science disciplines. The planning and implementation of science support requirements in Antarctica is a critical part of our mission.

The Challenge:

  • Lead and oversee South Pole Operations departments: vehicle maintenance; equipment operations; fuels; meteorology; ARFF; station services; waste.

  • Collaborate with teammate leadership from Amentum (station operations), Six Mile (waste management), and Gana-A'Yoo Service Corporation (GSC) (station services) in hiring, personnel management, and safe execution of the USAP mission.

  • Provide budget (Technical Manager) oversight for selected Operations departments when required.

  • Assist with development of Annual Program Plan budget information for selected Operations departments.

  • Provide input on Operations impacts from Project or Sustaining changes and plans.

  • Facilitate Operations support capabilities and solutions for National Science Foundation grantees, ASC departments, and other partner groups, including Support Forces Antarctica, Naval Information Warfare Center, NASA, and NOAA.

  • Status ASC and NSF management on support capability.

  • Communicate with station community and partner agencies on behalf of South Pole Operations.

  • Coordinate and engage in daily face-to-face communication with Operations Departments and customers

  • Liaise with project managers and teams to assist minor and major project activities.

  • Provide South Pole Emergency Management oversight in coordination with ASC Station Management and ASC Emergency Manager.

  • Provide off-ice support for Winter Site Manager and Winter Operations teams.

  • Lead South Pole Operations in developing new or improved operations capabilities and support modes.

  • Lead development and review of Operations department documentation, such as SOPs and JHAs.

  • Regularly develop and execute continuous improvement initiatives across all Operations departments.

  • Regularly communicate Operations concerns, status, and priorities to Deputy Operations Manager and ASC South Pole Area Management.

  • Work closely with ASC Area Management.

  • Participate in Performance Management Team (PMT) and other key station support meetings.

  • Provide conflict resolution and mentoring to Operations personnel as needed.

What Sets You Apart:

  • Bachelor's degree and 8+ years prior relevant experience, additional years of experience, or industry-relevant certifications will be considered in lieu of degree.

  • Minimum six (6) years of supervisory/management and administration experience.

  • Demonstrated aptitude with verbal and written communications to clients and customer groups.

  • Demonstrated experience with Management by Walking Around (MBWA)

  • Demonstrated experience with project planning and execution.

  • High level of comfort using Microsoft Office.

You Might Also Have:

  • Project Management Professional Certification

  • Six Sigma Training or equivalent

  • Light and/or Heavy Equipment Diagnosis and Repair Experience Emergency Management Experience.
