UCSF School of Medicine and UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals

Division of Critical Care Medicine, Department of Pediatrics

Specialist Series

The Bodansky Lab in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of California, San Francisco, and UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals is seeking Specialist candidates to help uncover the causes of severe and poorly understood diseases. Our lab leverages state-of-the-art and emerging technologies to achieve high-resolution profiling of the immune system.

We are seeking motivated and adaptable individuals with strong communication, critical thinking, and organizational skills to perform experiments and contribute to the ongoing work of the Bodansky Lab. Appointees will also benefit from close proximity and collaboration with the DeRisi Lab, led by Dr. Joe DeRisi, gaining exposure to world-class expertise in genomics and computational biology as part of their training environment.

Selected candidates will join a major academic medical center and established training program, and will actively contribute to the Department's mission of excellence in research, education, and patient care.

Key Responsibilities



  • Conduct biochemical and molecular analyses, including Western blot, immunohistochemistry, and immunoprecipitation
  • Perform functional genomics assays such as PhIP-Seq
  • Contribute to experimental design and carry out experiments under the direction of the Principal Investigator
  • Maintain accurate records of procedures and results; assist with data analysis and presentation
  • Participate in routine laboratory operations, including equipment maintenance, record keeping, environmental safety, and preparation of regulatory approvals (e.g., CAR)
  • Collaborate with lab members and support team-based research activities


Required Qualifications



  • Specialists appointed at the Junior rank must possess a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree) or at least four years of research experience (e.g., with instrumentation and research equipment, social science research methods, or creative activities)
  • Specialists appointed at the Assistant rank must possess either a master's degree (or equivalent degree) or a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree) with at least three years of research experience in the relevant specialization
  • Specialists appointed at the Associate rank must possess a master's degree (or equivalent degree) or five to ten years of experience in the relevant specialization
  • Specialists appointed at the Full rank must possess a terminal degree (or equivalent degree) or ten or more years of experience in the relevant specialization


Preferred Qualifications



  • BA/BS in a related science or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Foundational knowledge of immunology (through coursework or experience)
  • Proficiency in standard laboratory techniques (e.g., pipetting, buffer preparation, dilutions, chemical handling)
  • Computer proficiency, with working experience in Python and/or R preferred
  • Demonstrated interest in pediatric translational and basic science


Appointees in the Specialist Series will be expected to engage in specialized research and professional activities and do not have teaching responsibilities. Specialists are expected to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions and may participate in University and Public Service. Screening of applicants will begin immediately and will continue as needed throughout the recruitment period. Salary and rank are commensurate with the applicant's experience and training.

See Table 24B for the salary range for this position. A reasonable estimate for this position is $55,000-$194,800.
