Director, Diagnostic Medical Sonography -Education

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine invites applications for a 100% appointment as a Director of Diagnostic Medical Sonography Education in the Radiation Science Program, Department of Radiology. Appointment rank may be at the Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor level and to the instructional track. Appointment at the rank of Instructor (non-track) may also be considered. This position will provide oversight, coordination and leadership of the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program by designing, planning, integrating, and evaluating curriculum, and managing enrollment, academic standards and teaching resources. Key areas of responsibility include, admitting, teaching, advising, and retaining students, designing, planning, integrating and evaluating curriculum.

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Admit and retain prospective and current students for the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program





  • Advise current and prospective students regarding admission, registration, course selections, graduation requirements, and post-graduation plans.
  • Make decisions regarding selection and admissions and advise students regarding reason(s) for denial of admission and how to improve acceptance potential upon request.
  • Inform students of available scholarships.
  • Complete post-graduation recommendations.




Enrollment Management





  • Oversee student background checks, UIHC and affiliate site compliance course completion, and CPR and student health pre-entrance requirements.
  • Oversee textbook requirements and MAUI course management.
  • Oversee human resource requirements for clinical assignments (ID badges).
  • Encourage student involvement in extracurricular activities.
  • Participate in designing projects or processes to increase program value.
  • Manage course enrollments & recommend curriculum or course changes to faculty and administration.




Academic Standards and Curricular Policies





  • Handle individual requests for exceptions to curricular requirements based on established criteria.
  • Identify recurring problems that may require further study.
  • Lecture specific units of didactic education.




Academic Program Management (Planning, Designing, Integrating, and Evaluating Curriculum)





  • Provide curricular development and administrative oversight to the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program. Includes planning, designing, integrating and evaluating curriculum.
  • Provide oversight of program structure and daily operations.
  • Assign academic courses and evaluate program content, objectives and operating strategies.
  • Monitor profession for trends and implement innovative solutions to enhance Program services.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive assessment/evaluation program to achieve desired results and measure effectiveness of the Program.
  • Collect and analyze Program data and make recommendations using an evidence-informed approach.
  • Strategic planning; propose, plan and develop initiatives to increase Program value.
  • Cultivate a quality academic environment; formulate the mission, goals, and objectives for determining educational quality of the Program.
  • Ensure effectiveness of all clinical affiliates is maintained through periodic review and evaluation.
  • Describe the key relationships and dependencies with other University of Iowa (UI) business functions.
  • Establish academic consulting processes for relevant external stakeholders.




Budget Oversight and Management





  • Develop and monitor financial reports to assess alignment with program goals.
  • Approve routine expenditures.
  • Provide functional and administrative supervision to assigned faculty.
  • Hire, develop and manage the performance of assigned faculty; assure faculty are compliant with UI policies and procedures.
  • Complete assigned faculty human resource functions (PAs, time off, compliance completion, etc.).
  • Prepare special and operational budgetary reports.
  • Complete and distribute didactic schedules for class (include classroom assignments).
  • Oversee Program Library accumulation.
  • Review and develop Program budget and make recommendations on Program spending
  • Monitor Program revenue and expenditures.

Education Requirement:


  • Masters' Degree in a relevant field


Required Qualifications:


  • A minimum of 3 years of clinical experience in diagnostic medical sonography
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience as an instructor in a CAAHEP accredited program in diagnostic medical sonography, diagnostic cardiac sonography, or vascular technology
  • Certification by the ARDMS Certification Board
  • Experience in supervision, instruction, evaluation, student guidance and in educational theories and techniques
  • Demonstrated experience working effectively in a welcoming and respectful workplace environment


Desirable Qualifications:


  • Masters' Degree in Education, Leadership, or Business Administration
  • Experience with the CAAHEP accreditation process in diagnostic medical sonography, diagnostic cardiac sonography, or vascular technology
  • Experience with educational coursework to include educational theory, course development, instructional design, and assessment methods
  • Experience with distance education and web-based learning
