Carnegie Mellon University's Temporary Employment Services (TES) is seeking a Temporary Bibliographic Assistant.

The Temporary Bibliographic Assistant will support the Bibliography department in its day-to-day functions. This department serves as a central repository for bibliographic information on worldwide botanical literature. Duties will include collecting and managing data for integration in extensive databases and bibliographic resources. The role entails conducting research, digitizing content, entering data, maintaining records, translating/transliterating foreign languages, and handling other clerical responsibilities.

Your core responsibilities will include:

  • Conduct research and identify relevant literature for integration in departmental databases.

  • Develop, maintain, and ensure the accuracy of bibliographic records in accordance with established standards.

  • Digitize rare and fragile documents, film, and other media.

  • Assist in developing methods and protocols for the preservation of electronic data and valuable physical media.

  • Contribute content for online presentations and departmental outreach materials.

  • Transcribe analog materials into digital formats for publication.

  • Provide editing support, including work with foreign-language texts and non-Latin alphabets.

  • Evaluate and recommend subsets of the collection for future processing.

  • Support the creation and development of new databases.

  • Maintain professional communication and correspondence with staff and external researchers.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS) is highly desired

  • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.

  • Successful completion of a background check.

  • Sponsorship: Applicants for this position must be currently legally authorized to work for CMU in the United States. CMU will not sponsor or take over the sponsorship of an employment visa for this opportunity. Carnegie Mellon is not a qualifying employer for the STEM OPT benefit: only the 12-month OPT may be used to work at Carnegie Mellon.
