The Safety Intern will support key initiatives related to compliance management, data analysis, and operational safety insights. This includes assisting with the review and tracking of compliance waivers, maintaining a centralized waiver database, and identifying opportunities for renewal or extension. Interns will also contribute to data visualization and analytics projects using tools like Tableau, helping to uncover trends and communicate findings effectively. This role involves detailed data examination and collaboration with team members to ensure accurate, timely, and actionable insights.

In addition to project work, the intern will engage with safety professionals across the department, manage assigned tasks from start to finish, and support the team's commitment to regulatory compliance and continuous improvement. The position offers opportunities to apply analytical, organizational, and communication skills in a real-world safety environment.

As an intern, you will build knowledge and experience in our core business groups and their vision, business objectives, processes, systems and services. You will have extensive contact with peers and interaction with senior leaders. There will also be an opportunity to put leadership, technical skills, and business knowledge to immediate use through high-value project assignments.

This position will be administered as a year-round internship at Union Pacific's headquarters in Omaha, Nebraska. The work schedule is flexible and can be designed to accommodate the course commitments of the successful candidate. A flexible work schedule includes an average of 15-20 hours per week during the academic year, with up to 40 hours a week available during the summer months.

The estimated wage for this position is between $21-$24 per hour. Final rate of pay will be based on several factors including year of study, qualifications, experience, and internal equity.

Accountabilities
  • Learn core business processes related to safety compliance and waiver management
  • Regularly update and maintain a comprehensive database of existing waivers, including expiration dates
  • Identify opportunities for waiver renewal or extension and provide timely reminders to the team
  • Assist with data analytics and reporting projects using tools like Tableau
  • Provide operational support to department business group members
  • Build and strengthen a network of professional contacts across the company
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications - Required
  • College credits equivalent to one (1) year toward an undergraduate degree
  • Intermediate verbal and written communication skills
  • Intermediate organization, prioritization and time/project management skills
Qualifications - Preferred
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Familiarity with tools like Microsoft Excel and/or Tableau
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a willingness to ask questions and learn
  • Ability to think critically, evaluate various options and make decisions
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
Physical and Mental Job Requirements
  • This position requires extended periods of sitting and extended hours in front of computer screens
  • Maintain concentration, focuses on tasks and can make timely decisions
Work Conditions
  • Authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship
