Are you looking for an opportunity to provide HVAC/R maintenance support to the premier research center in the Baltimore/Washington area? Do you have experience with facility HVAC operations, repairs and preventive maintenance activities?

If so, we are looking for someone like you to join our team at APL.

We are seeking an experienced HVAC/R technician to assist with maintaining, inspecting, repairing, altering and installing building HVAC systems, associated digital and pneumatic controls, VAV boxes and air distribution systems.

As an APL HVAC/R technician you will ....

  • Perform general preventive maintenance on various types of refrigeration equipment, air conditioning equipment, coils, fans, steam canisters, humidifiers, air dryers. Typically, carry out all assignments under minimal supervision utilizing APL vehicles as necessary.
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose and repair refrigerant equipment and components such as condensing units, evaporators, compressors, controls, etc.
  • Install humidifiers, heat pumps and a variety of air conditioning systems including split systems, CRAC, package and window units.
  • Respond to occupant comfort service calls and indoor air quality reports.
  • Adhere to all EPA refrigerant handling requirements during charging, retrieval and disposing of various refrigerants.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Have the skills and knowledge normally associated with a formal training curriculum and 4 years' experience at the journeyman level.
  • Possess a State of Maryland HVAC license at the Apprentice level or beyond.
  • Possess EPA and CFC certification.
  • Understand the principles and application of the refrigeration cycle and the operation of a variety of HVAC units and systems.
  • Have a working knowledge of HVAC control systems, both digital and pneumatic.
  • Have the ability to use hand tools, power tools and HVAC test equipment.
  • Possess effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Are a capable user of personal computers.
  • Requires valid state-of-residence driver's license in good standing.
  • Are able to work the hours of 8:30am to 5:00pm, Monday through Friday, with possible overtime and emergency call-ins.
  • Are able to climb/work off ladders or scaffolding, in confined spaces and on rooftops. Able to lift 50 pounds.
  • Work outside in possibly inclement weather conditions.
  • Hold US Citizenship or permanent resident status, as required to access APL's facilities and networks, subject to applicable laws.

  • Possess a State of Maryland Journeyman or Masters HVAC/R license.
  • Possess Universal CFC certification.
  • Experience working in a Computerized Maintenance Management System.
  • Familiarity with Johnson Controls building automation system.

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL's good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance.
