Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Low Voltage Systems and DAS Engineer to join our dynamic IT Facilities team. In this role, you will be responsible for reviewing design submittals, ensuring compliance with UCDH Owner's Project Requirements (OPR) and maintaining our high DAS standards. You will oversee DAS deployments, coordinate with wireless carriers for final approvals, and lead system design efforts for both new construction and tenant improvement projects.

This position also plays a key role in the engineering and implementation of complex low voltage and physical layer systems, working closely with cross-functional teams to ensure reliable and standards-compliant infrastructure. Responsibilities include installation and maintenance of network and voice systems, including troubleshooting and servicing analog and IP-based overhead paging systems, application support, and performing Layer 1 and 2 testing.

As part of our mission-critical support team, this position participates in an on-call rotation to handle low voltage systems failures and environmental alerts, ensuring 24/7 operational continuity for UC Davis Health clinicians, staff, and patients.

  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30
  • Required to hold a valid California driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and /or equivalent experience / training. Acceptable training includes completion of a recognized technical training program in low voltage systems, structured cabling, or RF/DAS technologies. Or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may also be considered, provided it clearly demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of the role effectively.
  • At least 4 years of hands-on experience in the design, installation, testing, and maintenance of Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS) and low voltage infrastructure, including fiber and copper cabling.
  • Experience should include reading and interpreting construction drawings, basic low voltage systems design or layout support, cable pulling and termination, and field coordination with contractors or vendors.
  • Creation of close out documentation.
  • Familiarity with relevant codes and standards such as NEC, TIA/EIA, and OSHPD, as well as participation in on-site inspections and basic engineering support tasks, is expected.
  • Working knowledge of Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS), low voltage infrastructure, and structured cabling standards, including fiber and copper systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, technical specifications, and design documents.
  • Basic understanding of industry codes and standards such as NEC, TIA/EIA, and OSHPD.
  • Proficient in using tools and software related to infrastructure documentation and testing (e.g., signal analyzers, cable testers, Visio or CAD).
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to diagnose and resolve system issues independently.
  • Effective communication and organizational skills, with the ability to coordinate with contractors, vendors, and internal teams. Ability to travel to job sites and participate in an on-call rotation as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • RCDD (Registered Communications Distribution Designer) - BICSI
  • DCDC (Data Center Design Consultant) - BICSI
  • iBwave Design Certification - Level 2 or Pro
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, Information Systems, or a related technical discipline formal training in project management methodologies such as PMI, Agile, or Lean Six Sigma are especially desirable, as these frameworks align with UCDH's structured approach to delivering high-quality, standards-compliant infrastructure solutions.
  • Five or more years of progressively responsible experience in the design, engineering, and deployment of low voltage systems and DAS infrastructure-preferably within healthcare, data center, or similarly regulated environments.
  • Demonstrated expertise in structured cabling system design, backbone and horizontal cabling planning, telecom room layouts, and power integration.
  • Proven ability to lead large-scale DAS projects, including RF planning (using tools such as iBwave), commissioning, troubleshooting, and compliance verification for ERRCS and public safety systems.
  • Strong experience managing contractors, reviewing submittals, overseeing budgets and schedules, and producing detailed engineering documentation in alignment with NEC, BICSI, OSHPD, and TIA/EIA standards. Experience supporting 24/7 critical environments and participating in on-call rotations is highly desirable.
  • Advanced knowledge of Distributed Antenna System (DAS) design, deployment, and optimization, including experience with public safety (ERRCS) and commercial carrier integration. Proficiency with iBwave or similar RF planning tools, and familiarity with commissioning and acceptance testing procedures.
  • Strong understanding of structured cabling systems, including fiber backbone and copper distribution, with the ability to oversee installation to industry standards such as TIA/EIA, BICSI, NEC, and OSHPD.
  • Experience leading low-voltage infrastructure projects, including contractor coordination, design review, and compliance documentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage project timelines, budgets, and maintenance documentation using tools such as CAPPM or equivalent.
  • Effective communication and leadership skills, with the ability to collaborate across IT, facilities, and clinical teams.
  • Experience working in healthcare environments or other highly regulated industries is highly desirable.

Department Overview

The Infrastructure Cabling Services (ICS) department is a critical component of UC Davis Health's IT Facilities division, responsible for the planning, design, installation, and maintenance of all physical layer infrastructure across the enterprise. ICS supports a broad range of systems including structured cabling, fiber optics, distributed antenna systems (DAS), overhead paging, and network connectivity within data centers, telecommunications rooms, clinical spaces, and administrative buildings.

ICS ensures that all low voltage infrastructure meets institutional standards and regulatory requirements, enabling the secure, scalable, and high-performance operation of IT and clinical systems. The team plays a vital role in supporting UCDH's growth, participating in construction and renovation projects, technology upgrades, and compliance-driven initiatives. Through collaboration with Facilities Planning & Development (FP&D), Network Engineering, IT Project Management, Data Center Services and other stakeholders, ICS helps ensure technology readiness and reliability in support of patient care, research, and operations.
