Telephone Operator

Southern Cancer Center at Providence Hospital is seeking a courteous and detail-oriented Phone Room Operator to join our patient communications team. This role is essential in ensuring smooth and compassionate communication between patients, families, and medical staff. The ideal candidate will manage incoming calls, triage messages, and support clerical functions to maintain efficient workflow and exceptional service.

• Answer all incoming calls promptly and professionally; connect callers to the appropriate extension.
• Accurately take and relay messages in a timely manner.
• Respond to emergency and urgent patient calls, directing them to clinical staff immediately.
• Perform switchboard operations including call triage, transfers, conference call setup, and equipment issue reporting.
• Serve as a helpful and pleasant point of contact for all callers.
• Open and close the switchboard daily and manage the in-house paging system.
• Assist with clerical duties to support departmental workflow.

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Entry-level position; 0-3 years of experience preferred, ideally in a medical or customer service setting.
• Strong communication and organizational skills.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with high levels of patient and public interaction.

• Must be able to sit for extended periods and occasionally lift up to 30 lbs.
• Requires manual dexterity for operating phones, computers, and office equipment.
• Vision must be correctable to 20/20; hearing must be within normal range for phone communication.
• Work is performed in an office setting with frequent contact with patients and the public.
