Scientist VI

This position requires an active USAccess clearance or the ability to obtain a USAccess clearance to be considered.

The Scientist VI supports the Coastal Change Hazards Project by developing and implementing high-performance numerical models to simulate atmospheric, oceanographic, and sediment transport processes. The role involves advanced coding (primarily in FORTRAN and MATLAB), validating model output with field data, publishing peer-reviewed scientific papers, and supporting interdisciplinary research on coastal hazards, climate change, and marine geology. The position may also require participation in field studies, data management, and collaboration with federal and academic partners.

Compensation & Benefits:

Estimated Starting Salary Range for Scientist VI: $80,000-$86,000

Pay commensurate with experience.

Full time benefits include Medical, Dental, Vision, 401K, and other possible benefits as provided. Benefits are subject to change with or without notice.

Scientist VI Responsibilities Include:

  • Perform numerical simulations of nearshore physics to simulate wave shoaling, breaking, and runup.

  • Acquire, organize and format required input observational datasets (e.g., from online data repositories, project collaborators)

  • Develop and use computer code (e.g., Matlab, Python) to create model forcing and boundary data such as for tides, currents, and wave directional spectra.

  • Plan, coordinate, and assist in numerical experiments.

  • Test new algorithms using idealized and realistic test cases.

  • Compare model output with field observations, time series analysis.

  • Evaluate model performance using quantitative skill assessments.

  • Aid in the scientific interpretation of model results, including isolating physical processes to improve understanding of coastal dynamics.

  • Prepare documentation for presentation of results for public and scientific meetings, peer-reviewed journal publications, and public distribution through government web portals.
