We are searching for a leader in our 'Value and Evidence Solutions (VES)' group. The Analytics on Demand (AOD) Director has an extensive background in retrospective research conducted in large secondary databases. Successful leaders must have an entrepreneurial spirit-are innovative by nature, and always working to create new approaches and products, and services. The AOD Director supports internal teams and initiatives and develops solid relationships both internally and externally. The AOD Director not only advises internal research teams and external customers on strategy and evidence generation planning but works actively on research initiatives from ideation through dissemination.

Primary Responsibilities:



  • Drive the strategic vision and growth strategy for AOD
  • Lead Value & Evidence Solutions (VES) business development in the area for which you are responsible
  • Provide oversight of studies in area of responsibility
  • Execute studies in area of responsibility
  • Work with Value & Evidence Solutions (VES) leadership and other Optum business units to support innovation and expand service offerings in the AOD area
  • Participate in leadership of Value & Evidence Solutions (VES) operations
  • Lead the AOD area of Optum's Value & Evidence Solutions (VES) consulting business:
  • Support business development activities (including, but not limited to, development of proposals and face-to-face client engagement) to support pharmaceutical and device manufacturer client needs
  • Work closely with Director of Analytics to assess staffing needs and hiring/recruitment of research staff required to support area of responsibility
  • Resource and oversee execution of retrospective database and other AOD studies within your area of responsibility
  • Coordinate with other intercompany resources to support your business
  • Develop and promote strategy to increase efficiency and enhance offerings with modernization of technology and AI
  • Manage client relationships
  • Oversee project teams and manage study budgets and timelines
  • Mentor and train new research staff as needed
  • Grow the business through client relationships, new service offerings, and a reputation of consistently superior customer service and quality
  • Building a successful work environment. Ensure that the technical tools available (SAS, Stata, etc) are appropriately maintained and updated. Remove barriers that inhibit workflow.
  • Be knowledgeable about new tools and processes that could enhance productivity and new offerings in the department

Required Qualifications:



  • A Master's or PhD in any of the following: Epidemiology, Health Economics, Biostatistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Theoretical Physics, Quantitative Social Sciences, Statistics, or Information Systems
  • 8+ years of experience in VES, managed care, pharmaceutical, or similar field
  • 10+ years of research experience conducting VES research in various disease areas and with pharmaceutical and device therapies
  • 5+ years of project management experience
  • Demonstrated experience in management of teams across multiple functional areas
  • Experience with retrospective study design and appropriate methods
  • Demonstrated experience in data driven research
  • Demonstrated experience with secondary data assets, administrative claims databases and electronic medical record data
  • Demonstrated experience building relationships both internally and with customers
  • Proven leadership capabilities.
  • Proven to published/ co-authored paper in a peer-reviewed research journal
  • Able to travel on to clients and/or conferences a few times a year

  • Displays full knowledge of Optum's data assets, their appropriate use, study design, and retrospective research procedures.
  • Displays full knowledge of protocol and regulatory requirements
  • Applies knowledge into practice on-site
  • Proven to distinguish between good practice and regulatory requirements
  • Proven to convey thoughts in a clear, concise, and accurate manner. Listens carefully and asks questions when necessary to ensure understanding. Provides clear input and direction to internal study teams
  • Provides customers with prompt, complete, and accurate information. Quickly identifies needs and follows through on commitments made. Maintains a high energy level when interacting with customers.
  • Demonstrates professionalism and presents a positive image of the company. Looks for continuing opportunities to be consultative to help advance client's business objectives
  • Demonstrates commitment, dedication, cooperation, positive behavior, adaptability and flexibility with changes in responsibilities and duties. Meets timelines and follows up without being prompted. Plans travel
  • time well and makes effective use of time

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). No matter where or when you begin a career with us, you'll find a far-reaching choice of benefits and incentives. The salary for this role will range from $132,200 to $226,600 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
