Job Title: Information Technology Specialist
Clearance Required: Public Trust , Tier 2
Work Location: Asheville, NC; Silver Spring, MD; Stennis, MS; Boulder, CO; Remote

Alpha Omega is actively looking to fill a position with the NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) Data Stewardship Division (DSD). This division works in partnership with NOAA and the broader community to develop and maintain a robust and efficient infrastructure of hardware, software, and processes to support the ingest, long-term preservation, and delivery of environmental data products spanning the depths of the ocean to the surface of the sun.

We are seeking a skilled Information Technology Specialist to join our dynamic team. The ideal candidate will possess a solid understanding of internet technologies and web systems, along with hands-on experience in various operating systems, including Linux. This role involves operational support for several applications, cloud migration, and data management tasks.

Key Responsibilities:



  • Cloud Migration: Docker-ize applications in preparation for cloud migration, ensuring seamless transition and deployment.


  • Operational Support: Provide daily troubleshooting and resolution of issues related to Esri Geoportal Server, THREDDS, ERDDAP, and Hyrax applications. This includes configuring new datasets and performing software upgrades to meet system or security requirements.


  • Version Control Management: Utilize GitLab for managing software and configuration version control, ensuring all changes are tracked and documented. Automate build/test/deploy processes using CI/CD pipelines and tools.


  • Data Flow Management: Author and configure Apache NiFi flows to facilitate data movement and process orders for on-premises object storage or NFS storage, supporting the NOAA Open Data Dissemination (NODD).


  • Code Development: Write and maintain code for data management and access, including fixing or migrating broken legacy code.



Required Qualifications:

Education:

BS/BA Degree, or equivalent, in a related field. A bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics, or a related scientific field is preferred.

Experience/Skills:



  • 2-4 years of experience in a related field.


  • Solid understanding of the internet and web technologies.


  • Proficient in Windows or Mac, with substantial experience in Linux systems and command line interfaces.


  • Familiarity with Unix shell scripting (Bash, Bourne, C, etc.).


  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.


  • The ability to think independently and to jump into unfamiliar code.



Preferred Qualifications:



  • Cloud computing experience is a plus.


  • Experience with Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) products such as Esri Geoportal Server, THREDDS, ERDDAP, and Hyrax.


  • Knowledge of object storage and/or Apache NiFi is a plus.


  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Java, C, or Perl is an additional benefit.


  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and tools (e.g., Jenkins, GitLab CI, GitHub Actions) for automating build, test, and deployment processes.



Certifications:



  • Industry recognized certification in cloud computing (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) is preferred.



Salary and Benefit Information:

The likely salary range for this position is $50,250 - $62,000. This is not, however, a guarantee of compensation or salary. There are multiple factors that are considered in determining final pay for a position, including, but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and competencies that align to the specified role, education and certifications as well as contract provisions regarding labor categories that are specific to the position and could fall outside of this range.
