Job Description Summary:

The Human Centered Design Engineers (SMTS) are responsible for collecting, prioritizing, and documenting user needs/requirements, driving design in support of software solution development that meets user needs, and evaluating user experience and human performance both qualitatively and quantitatively. The engineer advocates for users when creating, evaluating, and modifying application prototypes to provide an efficient, effective and positive experience.

Duties/Responsibilities
* Evaluates user experience and human performance to develop prototypes.
* Creates, evaluates, and modifies application prototypes to provide an efficient, effective and positive user experience.
* Identify challenges and risks associated with assigned tasks.
* Defines approach to solve a particular problem and independently execute assignments.
* Contribute high quality content for technical reports and presentations with minimal guidance.
* Proactively identifies needs and concerns associated with project team decisions and communicates findings.
* Drives solutions to complex problems with limited direction - contribute to requirements development, propose ways forward, and adapt appropriately to changes in requirements.
* Provides insight and suggest adaptations or modifications to processes and/or applications based on quantitative data or results.
* Identifies project technical risks and develops and executes mitigation strategies for them.
* Actively mentors less experienced staff and provides thoughtful, constructive feedback.
* Performs other duties as assigned.

Skills/Abilities
* Curiosity-driven approach to solving complex, customer-driven problems as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
* Collaborate and communicate effectively and openly with multi-disciplinary program team members, program leadership, and non-technical personnel.
* Be a team player able to work in a fast-paced environment with the ability to balance multiple competing tasks and demands.

Education
Bachelor's Degree in Human-Computer Interaction, Human Factors, User Experience and Design, Computer Science, or a related field, Master's degree preferred.

Experience
Requires 5-7 years experience in Human Centered Design Engineering or related.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Draper is looking for Human Systems engineers to support our customers' missions in undersea, space and soldier systems within our Systems Engineering Directorate.
  • Supports strategy, defines guidelines for inclusion of human operators and teams into system requirements
  • Master or PhD preferred in Aerospace Engineering, Bioastronautics, Informatics, Human factors Engineering, Robotics, Computer Science or related field
  • Experience with development of requirements with SysML/ Cameo/ Magic Draw expertise, or
  • Matlab/ Simulink experience for aerospace applications
  • Human subject research and data collection
  • Expertise in Operational Autonomy/ Automation/ Robotic systems
  • Experience developing for Human- in-the-loop evaluations and tests within a systems engineering lifecycle
  • Able to engage with key stakeholders, such as operators, customers, and developers
  • Self-starter and imaginative thinker.
