HX5 is currently seeking a Researcher to join our team in Cleveland, Ohio in support of the GEARS contract at NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC). This is a part-time position; approximately 8 hours/week of support is desired.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The selected candidate will support the Glenn Extreme Environments Rig (GEER), a research platform that can provide accurate temperature, pressure, and chemistry for the Venus atmosphere. The main task will be to assist in proposal writing and interfacing with the scientific community. Work may include research, development, and operation of the GEER facility or development and science standards for Long-Lived Landers.

The selected candidate will provide support to the Smart Sensing and Electronics Systems Branch within the Communications and Intelligent Systems Division at NASA GRC.

Required Skills:

  • Ph.D. in Planetary Science or Geology
  • Familiarity with the Glenn Extreme Environments Rig (GEER)
  • Ability to write proposals; must have outstanding written and verbal communication skills
  • Expertise in research, instrumentation, remote sensing, and electronics used for planetary science
  • Familiarity with physical and chemical conditions of the Venus atmosphere
  • Understanding of material interactions, acid resistance, and redox reactions in reactive environments

Other Desired Skills:

  • Ability to perform experiments and analyze results
  • Familiarity with thermokinetic modeling software (Thermo-Calc or Cantera)
  • Familiarity with gas chromatography, mass spectroscopy, and optical spectroscopic methods
  • Familiarity with experimental setup of aerosol apparatus
  • Familiarity with semiconductor design, processing, and characterization: I-V curve response, spectral photovoltaic response, stress profiling

Education/Experience:

  • Ph.D. in Planetary Science or Geology with 5 to 15 years of experience.

Other Position Requirements:

  • Proof of U.S. Citizenship or US Permanent Residency is a requirement for this position.
  • Must be able to complete a U.S. government background investigation.
