JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS

We are seeking a highly motivated graduate student for research opportunities in the Materials Science and Applications Division of the Applied Research Lab (ARL) at Penn State . These positions cover a broad range of engineering and material science disciplines with various activities within the Materials Science and Applications Division. Typical duties for a broad range of programs involving various aspects of metal based additive manufacturing including directed energy deposition, laser-based powder bed fusion, and additive repair.

ARL is an authorized DoD SkillBridge partner and welcomes all transitioning military members to apply.

You will:

  • Conduct microstructural characterization techniques that includes hardness testing, electron microscopy (SEM, EBSD), and x-ray diffraction (XRD) for phase identification, phase fractions and grain morphology
  • Aid in modeling and simulation using ABAQUS FEA to help model thermal history and help predict distortion within a part during additive manufacturing processing
  • Aid in literature review on additive manufacturing and heat treating of various alloy systems such as steels, titanium alloys and copper alloys
  • Prepare reports on results of testing

Other activities may include:

  • Assist in additive manufacturing processing of metallic alloys that includes directed energy deposition and powder bed fusion processing
  • Metallurgical sample preparation
  • Support mechanical testing such as tensile testing and fatigue testing
  • Compile and analyze data including statistical analysis

The successful candidates will work up to 40 hours/week over the summer and 20 hours/week during the fall and spring semesters.

Minimally requires a Bachelors Degree and in an Engineering or Science discipline and be enrolled in a Masters of Engineering (MEng), Master of Science (MS), or Ph.D. program.
