Overview |
The School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, located on the George H. Cook Campus, is one of the largest schools of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. We pursue excellence in research, teaching, and outreach in areas of study that address the biological spectrum from molecules to ecosystems. Our emphasis is on both the fundamental sciences and the social and human dimensions. We offer 21 undergraduate majors, including plant and animal sciences, microbiology, biotechnology, agriculture and food systems, landscape architecture, food and nutritional sciences, ecology and evolution, marine science and oceanography, environmental sciences and meteorology, human ecology, entomology, and environmental economics.
In addition to instruction in the classroom, field, and laboratory, our students have opportunities for experiential learning on and off campus, including a growing emphasis on international experiences through short- and long-term study abroad. Students also have access to a robust program of applied research and outreach hosted by the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station laboratories, farms, business incubators, and marine stations throughout the state. |

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking an Accounting Assistant I for the Business
Office department within the Rutgers School of Environmental and Biological Sciences. Reporting to the Business Manager
III Supervisor and under general supervision he is responsible for the financial administration of all funding sources.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
- Processes various financial documents and data.
- Reviews data consistent with a basic understanding of the business unit's mission, vision, role, and goals, and the tasks and responsibilities of the Accounting Assistant I concerning achieving unit goals.
- Coordinates work which may include personnel, purchasing, and academic support.
- Works under general supervision, within established work parameters, with few direct instructions.
- Carries out routine and non-routine tasks with occasional review of work outputs by supervisor.
- Works independently on expenditure analyses, prepare spreadsheets for grant closeouts, and reconcile monthly expenditure reports.
- Collaborates with the Business Manager and the SEBS Business Office to ensure that actions have appropriate documentation, justification, backup, and approval.
- Interacts directly and independently with department personnel to obtain funding sources and details supporting purchases, travel, expense reimbursement requests, and other financial actions.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience |
- A bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience demonstrating knowledge and understanding of generally accepted accounting principles and practices.
- A minimum of two years of relevant experience in a financial/accounting function.

- Good communication skills, and computer literacy.
- Strong communication/organizational skills.
- Work to be done is professional-level work that requires knowledge of financial/accounting work and practices, the basic application and use of concepts, theories, and terminology of the unit administration, and serving as a liaison for the Business Office.
- A strong familiarity with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and Practices (GAAP), Federal, State, and University accounting policies and practices/procedures, and a good understanding and application of concepts, theories, principles, practices, and terminologies in applied accounting.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Prior experience with Oracle applications, familiarity with federal granting agency policies and procedures, and financial reporting experience.
