Hourly Pay Range:

$22.14 - $33.21 - The hourly pay rate offered is determined by a candidate's expertise and years of experience, among other factors.

Orthopedics Technician - Chicago

Position Highlights:

  • Position: Orthopedics Technician
  • Location: Chicago, IL
  • Full Time/Part Time: Full Time
  • Hours: Monday-Friday, between 6:30am- 5pm, rotating Saturdays between 8am - 1pm
  • Required Travel: Limited Travel

What you will do:

A Brief Overview:
The Orthopedic Technician will assist physicians, physician assistants and nurses with the care and treatment of orthopedic patients. An orthopedic tech specializes in casting, bracing and splinting and is an expert in applying plaster and synthetic casts.

What you will do:

  • Knowledge and application of NorthShore policies and procedures that apply to job and area of responsibility.
  • Knowledge and demonstration of NorthShore customer service standards.
  • Knowledge of and compliance with Federal, State and local laws that apply to the job's area of responsibility.
  • Knowledge of and compliance with NorthShore policies and procedures that apply to the job and area of responsibility.
  • Ongoing growth and development from participation in events such as workshops, in-service programs and departmental meetings.
  • Provide service based on physical, psychological, educational and related criteria appropriate to the age and type of the patients/customers served in their area.
  • Greet patient and place in exam rooms.
  • Perform vital signs with special attention to the geriatric, neonatal and pediatric patients; prepare patients for physician visit.
  • Document in the EMR utilizing the standardized rooming patient protocol.
  • Apply and remove all casts.
  • Perform dressing changes.
  • Draw up injections on behalf of MD.
  • Speak to patients over the phone regarding cast problems and recommend office visit when applicable.
  • Speak to patients over the phone regarding pain related to weight-baring and recommend visit for new cast, if necessary.
  • Set up sterile fields for minor procedures in the office (e.g. screw removals).
  • Apply braces (ankle braces, knee immobilizers).
  • Provide verbal and written patient education re: cast care.
  • Provide MD with appropriate written patient education materials, upon request, based on CPT code and/or based on cast tech's assessment.
  • Demonstrate foot and ankle exercises to patient.
  • Teach patient proper way to apply braces.
  • Teach patient how to apply a Hapad or other type of foot pad or splint to their foot.
  • Print notes from Ortho Pad.
  • Prepare surgical packets for physician one week in advance on surgery; copy notes, copy radiology test results and provide to hospital contacts, locate x-rays/cat scans/MRIs and put into x-ray travel bag, call patient if patient needs to bring films from non-NorthShore facility.
  • Ensure the cleanliness of the laboratory; maintain inventory of supplies and order as needed.
  • Work jointly with management to maintain NorthShore Performance Improvement Standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by practice management and physician.
  • Change blade and filter on cast saw.
  • Autoclave instruments daily.
  • Frequent and ongoing communication with MD regarding patient status, activities and work completed.
  • Communicate effectively with team members.
  • Consistently cooperate with all team members.
  • Recognize and provide needed assistance to co-workers.
  • Demonstrate flexibility.
  • Meet departmental attendance standards.
  • Perform duties assigned.
  • Complete all documentation requirements.
  • Manage in-basket messages correctly and document in the EMR.
  • Use Smart Sets, Smart Tools and Smart Phrases in the EMR.
  • Addendums encounters correctly.
  • Navigate through the EMR chart.

What you will need:

  • High School Required
  • 1 Year of experience in a physician practice setting is preferred. And
  • Graduate of an accredited medical assistant program preferred.
  • Evidence of leadership
  • Problem-solving abilities
  • Effective communication skills
  • Basic computer skills and clinical competence
  • Ability to work evening hours if required
  • CPR or BLS - American Heart Association (AHA) Current CPR certification Required And
  • Orthopedic Clinical Nurse Specialist - Certified (OCNS-C) - Orthopaedic Nursing Certification Board (ONCB) Registered Orthopedic Technologist certification from the American Society of Orthopedic Professionals Required
