Position Summary
The Research Informatics team supports basic, translational, and clinical research by providing cutting-edge digital tools and technologies. Our team includes software engineers, PhD-level bioinformaticians, and HPC specialists working with physician-scientists across a wide range of biomedical disciplines, including microscopy, CryoEM, and genomics.

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Software Engineer with experience in Python, Java, SQL, noSQL, REDCap, Snowflake, Linux, and cloud computing. This role involves close collaboration with researchers to develop and implement solutions that advance discovery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Designing, developing, maintaining, and supporting software. Conducting analysis of research problems and leading the evaluation, development, and recommendation of specific technology products and platforms to provide cost-effective solutions that meet requirements. Guiding configuration, debugging, and support for software and ensuring all quality and change control standards are met. Assisting with root cause investigations and providing recommendations for preventative measures. Proactively addressing gaps with existing support processes and documentation.
  • With minimal supervision and direction, completing assignments in the required timeframe; consistently adhering to and promoting best practices; documenting changes, and adjusting internal processes; resolving problems and seeking supervisor assistance when needed.
  • Routinely leading, co-leading, or participating in projects; setting goals and objectives for projects and demonstrating achievement of those goals and objectives; coordinating work activities; contributing to the resulting presentations and/or publications.
  • Training staff and researchers; effectively tailoring presentations; developing, implementing, and maintaining knowledge management systems.
  • Creating or contributing to a range of compelling communications (e.g., presentations, e-mails, and publications) that clearly deliver content; preparing communications appropriate for management and internal distributions.
  • Presenting at project and departmental meetings; effectively conveying progress and asserting point of view; constructively discussing issues and providing facts; building credibility and trust by asking thoughtful questions and actively listening; running productive project meetings that advance problem-solving.

Minimum Qualifications
Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in STEM

Experience:

  • Minimum of one year of advanced computer science experience. Preference for candidates with bioinformatics/genomics background.
  • Extensive knowledge of programming in Python required. Familiarity with other technologies such as REDCap, Snowflake, and Java. Experience working with biomedical and/or patient-level data, and ability to follow stringent data privacy requirements.
  • Extensive knowledge of scripting (bash or tcsh), databases (SQL and noSQL), and biomedical software. Knowledge of OOP programming, agile programming, API building, and web frameworks.
  • Ability to independently resolve a wide range of assignments in support of biomedical research; ability to routinely lead projects and coordinate project teams; readiness to seek advice and guidance when needed and to operate effectively in collaboration with scientists and clinicians; ability to follow, improve, and create technical documentation.
  • Effectively conveying messages through written and verbal communication, ability to tailor to target audience; ability to conduct effective meetings, present in forums, and develop training instructions and manuals; experience with teaching and effective mentoring; ability to effectively engage with scientists and clinicians.
  • Passion for new technologies.
  • Preference for candidates with experience managing genetic data (e.g., WGS/WES, RNAseq data pipelines, patient-level data, structural biology data), and knowledge of the specific needs of biomedical researchers.
