Position Summary
The Director of Business Strategy and Development role is critical in driving the firm's strategic initiatives, enhancing operational efficiencies, and ensuring sustainable growth. The ideal candidate will possess a proven track record in strategic planning, and the ability to influence and lead change. The Director of Business Strategy and Development will have oversight of the Marketing and Business Development departments. This role will leverage existing client relationships to track and expand business opportunities through cross-selling, geographic expansion, client and competitive intelligence insights, and rate assessments, and will identify, strategize and capitalize on new client opportunities to help the firm achieve revenue and profitability goals.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Strategic Workforce & Talent Planning:
  • Assist in the development and implementation of the firm's long-term strategic plan.
  • Identify and analyze market trends, competitive landscape, and opportunities for growth.
  • Work with Firm Leadership on developing strategic priorities enacted through business development plans that identify, target and track expanded business opportunities.
  • Proactively cultivate and present business development ideas to Practice Group and
  • Firm Leadership to assist in the execution of approved plans.
  • Identify new trends, concepts and potential business partners that will enhance the business in alignment with the strategic plan.
  • Based on client issues, contacts and our service offerings identify revenue streams, business development priorities and target revenue/profitability.
  • Regularly conduct Practice Group assessments.
Operational Excellence:
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of implemented strategies.
  • Provide insights and recommendations to enhance service delivery and client satisfaction.
  • Develop and report on client analytics.
Financial Management:
Collaborate with the finance team to develop budgets and financial forecasts.
Analyze financial data to assess the profitability of strategic initiatives.
Identify cost-saving opportunities and revenue enhancement strategies.
Help drive partner and practice group accountability for business development plan success by using project management principles to ensure follow through by stakeholders.
Track and measure attorney business development productivity through revenue and profitability analysis.
Identify opportunities to offer new services or enhance existing services in order to attract high-value work and enhance the value provided to clients.
Identify, and propose solutions for clients trending in the wrong direction.
Work with the Facilitation Committee and Practice Group Leaders to develop pricing strategies, including rate setting strategy and alternative pricing arrangements.
Market Intelligence:
  • Conduct market research and competitive analysis to inform strategic decisions.
  • Stay updated on industry trends, regulatory changes, and emerging technologies.
  • Present findings and strategic insights to senior leadership and stakeholders.
  • Identify, analyze, and pursue potential client engagement opportunities for the firm, both within the existing client base and from prospective clients. This will include research and market intelligence to identify emerging trends, the movement of competitors, and new client demands and expectations that can help guide the development of, and level of investment in, new practices and otherwise grow firm revenue.
  • Evaluate practice group strengths and conduct research on existing and prospective clients, competitor activity and industry or market trends to aid in the development of BD plans, pitches, presentations and proposals.
  • Maintain strong understanding of firm service offerings, market differentiators and value proposition to help drive targeting efforts across the breadth of a client's business units and functions.
Leadership and Team Development:
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing business strategy team.
  • Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Promote professional development and knowledge sharing within the team.
Job Requirements
Position Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree required; post-graduate degree preferred
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in strategic planning, business strategy, or a related role
  • Proven track record of developing and executing successful business strategies and developing successful client retention plans
  • Extensive experience leading teams
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information
  • Proficient with client relationship management (CRM)
  • Strong understanding of project management methodologies, tools, and best practices.
  • Excellent leadership and team management skills, with the ability to motivate and inspire cross-functional teams.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively interact with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Solid organizational and time management abilities, with a keen attention to detail.
    Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to make sound decisions under pressure.
  • Regularly required to clearly communicate and exchange information in English
  • Regularly required to observe and assess data and documents, in printed form and on computer screens
  • May be requested to work beyond normal work hours and weekends for special projects
  • Ability to work independently within general guidelines and minimal supervision
  • Ability to recognize the need for confidentiality of information and to maintain such confidences
  • Ability to respond to internal or external inquiries, including those of a sensitive, confidential, or adversarial nature
Work Environment & Physical Demands:
  • Work is generally performed within an office environment with standard office equipment, which subjects the individual to the following physical and mental demands to fulfill the essential functions of the position.
  • Regularly required to physically operate routine office equipment such as telephones, computers, copiers, printers, fax machines, etc.
  • May be required to move objects up to 50 lbs. from one level to another from time to time.
  • Must have reliable means of transportation to work location

  • Salary Range: $170k-200k
