Salary: The budgeted salary range for the position is $70,000 -$80,000. The final salary offered will be determined by a thorough assessment of available market data, internal salary equity, candidate experience and qualifications, and budget constraints.

Position Summary
This position contributes to the design and delivery of electron microscopy research projects and helps researchers to develop, execute and interpret research projects. Performs complex laboratory and data collection techniques.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Operation of Electron Microscopes (Transmission and Scanning) and related ancillary equipment. Includes day-to-day operations, and trouble-shooting minor problems with the instruments.
  • Train new users at different levels of expertise in using microscopes and related equipment and instruments.
  • Modification of methods for non-routine types of samples encountered.
  • Provide guidance in experimental design and produce image data as needed for good experimental outcome.
  • Provide guidance in the interpretation of image data obtained.
  • Provide EM services and/or instrument training for an overall positive outcome.
  • Provide excellent communication and guidance to researchers of various level of academic/industrial backgrounds.
  • Ensure chemicals and safety protocols and procedures are practiced in the EM core including proper chemical waste management/compliance with regular safety training.
  • Provide cost estimates and routine monthly billing of EM services rendered.
  • Responsible for ordering supplies as approved by the Director to maintain a smooth workflow for the core facility
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


  • Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in biological sciences or related field required. Master's degree or PhD is preferred. A combination of required education and related work experience can be considered to fulfill the position.
    • A minimum of 3 years related research experience.
    • Hands-on experience with electron microscopy techniques, including sample preparation, imaging, and analysis.
    • Proficiency in operating and troubleshooting transmission electron microscopes (TEM) with a focus on biological applications.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a team-based research environment.
    • Demonstrated organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively.
    • Experience with image processing and analysis software (e.g., ImageJ, FIJI) is desirable.
    • Prior experience working in a research core facility or shared resource environment is a plus.
    • Must be a dedicated and team-oriented individual.
    • Knowledge in preparation techniques for a variety of biological samples.
    • Proficient Microtomy skills for EM and LM and related their staining techniques.
    • Prior experience in cryo-EM methodologies and related instrumentation is also highly
      desirable.
