Railroad & Transit Team

Burns is currently seeking an Electrical Engineer to join our Railroad & Transit team in Washington, D.C.

SUMMARY

We are seeking a technically proficient Electrical Engineer to support our Transit client's Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) initiatives, including the design and implementation of power systems for bus facilities and battery electric bus infrastructure. This role involves design reviews, load analysis, field support, and technical documentation for critical electrification projects, including vehicle charging systems and renewable energy integration

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES



  • Perform design reviews of power distribution systems (34.5kV and below), focusing on constructability and functional compliance.
  • Review load estimates for bus facility electrical systems and battery electric bus (BEB) charging infrastructure.
  • Evaluate design submittals for electrical infrastructure including AC/DC and DC/DC charging systems.
  • Review load calculations, electrical circuit designs, and equipment sizing for compliance and performance.
  • Analyze coordination studies, short circuit studies, and arc flash analyses for system reliability and safety.
  • Review lighting calculations and photometric designs for facility projects.
  • Evaluate solar photovoltaic (PV) system designs and interconnection diagrams for integration with existing infrastructure.
  • Provide technical support in accordance with design criteria, specifications, and applicable industry codes (NFPA, NEC, ANSI/NETA).
  • Review and respond to electrical submittals and RFIs during design and construction phases.
  • Provide field support including site surveys, commissioning, inspections, and field testing.


    EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE



    • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field.
    • Minimum of 3 years of experience in electrical design and engineering.
    • Experience in scope development, technical specification writing, and electrical system analysis.
    • Proficiency in AutoCAD and ability to interpret and update engineering drawings.
    • Working knowledge of NFPA 70, 70B, 130, and ANSI/NETA MTS-2015 standards.
    • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification in Virginia, Maryland, or Washington, D.C.


    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS



    • Professional Engineering License
    • Experience with Battery Electric Bus (BEB) electrical systems, EV charging infrastructure, and Charge Management Systems (CMS).
    • Professional Engineer (PE) license in VA, MD, or DC.
    • Experience in electrical design for solar PV systems and vehicle charging stations.
