Position Summary Information
Primary Purpose |
Under the immediate supervision of the
PHCC Assistant Dental Director and the Director, performs duties related to infection control and the sterilization and dispensing areas. |
Essential Functions |
- Process dental instruments and equipment, including receiving, cleaning, wrapping, and sterilizing semi-critical and critical items; disinfect non-critical portable dental equipment; inspect the contents of all instrument cassettes and packages for completeness and damage; replace as needed.
- Operate and assist in the maintenance of washing and cleaning sterilization machines, including weekly biological testing of autoclaves.
- Prepare pre-packaged disposable items; dispense instrument cassettes and dental materials/equipment according to established procedures.
- Maintain an accurate inventory of borrowed and returned cassettes, materials, and equipment, and secure all inventories according to established procedures.
- Order supplies for dispensing windows; restock inventory as needed.
- Maintain a neat, clean, orderly sterilization room and dispensing area according to established standards.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the PHCC Assistant Dental Director and the Director.

Minimum Qualifications |
Education/Certifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Certification in Central Sterilization is required or must be obtained within twelve (12) months of employment.
Experience:
- Minimum of one (1) year of experience in a dental/medical setting.

Preferred Qualifications |
Experience:
- Previous experience in a hospital or health care delivery system is highly desirable.
Knowledge of:
- Sterilization techniques.
- Dental instruments/materials and their use.
- Dental terminology and procedures. Infection control protocol and requirements.
Ability to:
- Communicate effectively with faculty, staff, and patients.
- Effectively assist staff and faculty.
- Maintain a professional demeanor at all times.
- Apply time management skills.
- Demonstrate initiative and sound judgment in a fast-paced environment.
- Work independently or as part of a team.
- Index and alphabetize accurately.
- Recognize and set up dental instruments.
- Use an electronic tracking system using bar coding, scanners, and reports provided by tracking software.
Other:
- Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
- Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting.

Physical Requirements |

Requires standing during most working hours. Requires lifting instrument baskets in and out of an autoclave machine and lifting boxes of gloves and dental materials up to forty (40) lbs. Requires moving large mobile carts through clinic areas.
Work Environment/Work Week/Travel:
Position is full-time, eight (8) hours per day, five (5) days per week. Must be available to work varying shifts, including evenings. Occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens may reasonably be anticipated. Personal protective equipment will be provided to reduce or eliminate exposure to routine or limited infectious agents. |
Hiring Range |
$20.16 - $26.70 per hour. We consider factors such as, but not limited to, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. |
