TheSenior CAD Surface Designerwill be part of the Advanced Visualization team to support Industrial designers in developing preliminary CAD models, working from basic sketches, 2D Layouts, or clay models. As well as extending into the final stages of pre-production, creating realistic representations of digital twins. You will flex your surfacing skills as an expert, along with growing your collaborative abilities, with opportunities to mentor designers and engineers within the process of surface design and visual communication. This role requires a strong aesthetic and mechanical sensibility to conceive elegant and effective solutions to complex geometric, ergonomic, and mechanical challenges.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • You will be a key member of a collaborative, cross-disciplinary team striving to develop 3D content (models/renders/prototypes) to communicate project visualization, align with Milwaukee VBL (Visual Brand Language), and maintain design intent through to manufacture.

  • Create high-quality (Class A) cosmetic surface/solid body CAD models using industry-standard tools like Blender, Solidworks, Rhino3D, Keyshot, etc.

  • Leverage rapid prototyping techniques such as 3D printing to validate parts.

  • Create and develop "no compromise" models that meet design intent and product requirements.

  • Use visualization tools to communicate design and geometry at various points in the development process. This may include the conceptual geometry for Front End Innovation, CAD geometry to support prototype validation, and production-level modeling.

  • Act as a mentor to others in developing good modeling techniques and process workflow.

  • Provide design recommendations, solutions, or collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver designs based on established criteria.

  • Work collaboratively with multiple cross-functional teams on complex programs in fast-paced environments.

  • Continuous development of advanced specialty functions related to the Surface Design profession.

    • Act as the subject matter expert, contributing across multiple project teams.

    • Actively investigate new toolsets for the continuous improvement of the design processes.

    • Become an advocate for digital craftsmanship and the need to deliver high quality geometry and exceptional visuals.

  • Develop soft goods CAD from tech-pack pattern plans and prototype samples

Experience/Requirements:

  • Experience: 3-6+ years of working as a CAD Surface Designer within a design-related industry.

  • Bachelor's degree with 3D modeling or a related field and a strong portfolio showcasing advanced surface CAD with detailed project contributions.

  • Engineering or Design-related experience with a working knowledge of surface modeling, polygon modeling, rapid prototyping, and visualization.

  • Understanding of Visual Brand Language (VBL), form, and shape.

  • Ability to interpret and take direction based on various design inputs such as digital/physical sketches, clay models, foam core mockups or verbal direction.

  • Ability to develop creative design solutions through advanced CAD and mechanical design skills.

  • Proficiency in Blender is preferred, but must have advanced experience in multiple 3D CAD software and be willing to learn new programs.

  • Additional skills in Adobe Creative Suite, Substance Designer/Painter, Autodesk Max or Maya, Unreal Engine would be beneficial.

  • Ability to translate styling models from and to Siemens NX.

  • Experience with the methods and materials used to manufacture tools.

  • Results-driven, detail-oriented, and continuously seeking improvement.

  • Strong collaboration skills, showcasing constructive feedback on surface design to improve the aesthetics of a part/form.

  • Strong ability to work with and influence cross-functional teams and stakeholders.

  • Expected to work on several projects concurrently. Quickly responds to accelerated changes in project directions.

  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication

  • Ability to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and effectively prioritize tasks.

This position is located at Milwaukee Tool in Downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Due to the highly collaborative environment, this is not a remote position.
