We are searching for an Entomologist who can support the team on a as needed contract basis. The successful candidate will microscopically examine and enumerate isolated filth elements from a variety of food products. In this role you will identify filth elements such as whole insects, mites, insect fragments, moldy product, and other extraneous materials. Essential Functions:
- Using the appropriate microscope, accurately quantify, qualify, and correctly categorize isolated filth elements from the following types of products: poultry, meat, fish, and other marine products, fruits and fruit products, vegetables and vegetable products, beverages, and spices.
- Maintain and record identified filth elements on appropriate worksheets.
- Actively participate in any Proficiency Samples Program deemed relevant by Certified Laboratories for the quantification of isolated filth elements.
- Utilizing the correct methodology, perform wet chemical analysis to accurately isolate micro extraneous filth elements from various food products.
- Work with the Extraction/Spice Laboratory Associates to perform spice chemical analysis, using the proper ASTA/AOAC methods.
- Maintain proficiency while use and care of various microscopes.
- Familiarity with preparing solutions necessary for filth extractions. This includes accurate labeling and record keeping of all solutions and reagents.
- Daily, verify and record calibration of the top load balance used to weigh samples.
- Train other Micro analytical Laboratory Associates in use of new forms, reports, procedures, or equipment according to organization policy.
Requirements:
- Entomology degree from an accredited school or university.
- Three to five years analytical experience in a food laboratory
- Strong relevant qualitative and quantitative skills.
- Strong microscopy skills and understanding of technology to enhance identifications.
- Excellent organizational skills - ability to use one's time, energy, resources, etc. in an effective manner.
- Excellent hand/eye coordination and manual dexterity.
- Ability to distinguish colors.
- Ability to stand for prolonged periods.
- Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent Judgment skills - Critical thinking, complex problem solving, decision making, analyzing, and evaluating
