Brief Summary of Work for this Position
UNCW's Division for University Advancement is seeking a dynamic and detailed oriented Assistant Director of Advancement Boards. This position will foster meaningful connections and advance the university's mission by effectively managing volunteer board activities and relationships. We offer a fast-paced yet light-hearted working environment where work-life balance and teleworking flexibility is afforded.
This position requires a highly organized and strategic professional who can handle intricate details and navigate relationships with colleagues, donors and other influential individuals. The ideal candidate is a proactive planner who is also adaptable.
Reporting to the Director of Advancement Events and Boards, the Assistant Director of Advancement Boards will be responsible for creating meaningful volunteer experiences for the UNCW Foundation Board, UNCW Board of Visitors and the Friends of UNCW. This work includes but may not be limited to volunteer recruitment, adherence to governing policies, planning business meetings and immersive experiences and ongoing volunteer communications. This work will be accomplished under the guidance of the senior leadership team and in close collaboration with colleagues throughout the division. This position also provides strategic and logistical support to the UNCW Alumni Association Board of Directors, Board of Directors of the UNCW Student Aid Association (Seahawk Club), the External Affairs Committee of the Board of Trustees, and the UNCW Parents Council.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Initiates strategic discussions and planning meetings with the Vice Chancellor, the Associate Vice Chancellor and the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Major Gifts
  • Proactively plans all annual board activities (to include meetings, events, communications, etc.) and collaborates with colleagues to achieve desired outcomes
  • Creates opportunities to recruit, cultivate and steward board volunteers
  • Fosters strong working relationships with board leaders as well as all volunteers
  • Ensures all boards adhere to appropriate regulations and policies (by-laws, articles of incorporation, state and university policy)

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor's degree and one year of experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • Experience managing a volunteer board and knowledge of board governance
  • Strong awareness of the development cycle
  • Understanding of higher education landscape
  • Experience with Asana or other project management systems
  • Experience with OnBoard or other board management systems

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Division for University Advancement is responsible for the following primary goals:
1) Coordinate a campus-wide, comprehensive effort to raise philanthropic funds that support the strategic plan and mission of the university.
2) Manage an inclusive alumni engagement program designed to serve and engage nearly 100,000 alumni as ambassadors, advocates and donors.
3) Strengthen and expand UNCW's donor pipeline through effective discovery, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies.
4) Ensure that external boards ( UNCW Foundation Board, Board of Visitors, Student Aid Association Board, Alumni Association Board of Directors and the Friends of UNCW) are effective in their mission of supporting UNCW.
The division's fundraising efforts are enhanced by effective partnerships with the campus community as well as external constituents including alumni, parents, corporations, foundations, volunteers and friends. Development areas include annual giving, leadership annual giving, major gifts, principal gifts, corporate and foundation engagement and planned giving, as well as alumni engagement.
