JOB ANNOUNCEMENT Coordinating Engineer-I - $112,608.00 Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) Number of Positions: 2 Applications for this position will be accepted until 11:59pm CDT on May 27, 2025. Join the Chicago Department of Transportation team as a Coordinating Engineer I. The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) implements a large Capital Plan, which has been increased over the past several years to add over $1.6B of transformative new transportation and urban design projects. CDOT is hiring two (2) Coordinating Engineer I positions in the Complete Streets and Highways Sections. The Complete Streets section designs and implements projects within the Department's bicycle, pedestrian, transit, and traffic safety programs. While the Highways section implements projects within the Department's arterial resurfacing, corridor reconstruction, traffic signal modernization, and major intersection programs. Both positions will assist in the management of design engineering work within the respective programs. The selected candidates will work to ensure projects use community engagement, context sensitive design, and engineering best practices to create streets and public places that are well-designed, well-constructed, and reflective of the unique character of Chicago's diverse neighborhoods. * Coordinates permit applications and restoration agreements.
Additional duties may be required for this position. Location: 2 N. Lasalle Chicago, IL 60602 Days: Monday-Friday Hours: 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. THIS POSITION IS EXEMPT FROM THE CAREER SERVICE Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALFICATIONS * Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Engineering, plus five (5) years of work experience in the planning, design and construction management of engineering projects, of which three (3) years are in a supervisory role related to the responsibilities of this position or an equivalent combination of training and experience, provided that the minimum degree requirement is met. * Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.E.) is required. At the time of employment, positions must have obtained Registrations as a Professional Engineer (P.E.) in the State of Illinois. * A valid State of Illinois Driver's License is required. SELECTION REQUIREMENTS: This position requires an applicant to successfully complete an interview which will include a writing exercise. The interviewed candidate possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position, based on the oral and written parts of the interview will be selected. Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following: * Previous project management experience in urban transportation design and/or construction projects such as roadway corridor reconstruction, arterial street resurfacing, viaduct vertical clearance improvement, traffic signal modernization, and/or major intersection reconfiguration. * Knowledgeable of best practices in bicycle/pedestrian/transit infrastructure and policies * Previous experience in reviewing and preparing project concepts, scopes, estimates, plans, and specifications. * Previous experience working with transportation agencies, i.e., CDOT, IDOT and FHWA with knowledge of their standards and guidelines. * Previous work experience with traffic design and planning * Demonstrated ability to deliver projects in a complex and high-stress environment * Proficiency using Micro Station * Experience using Synchro * Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Excel, Power Point and Outlook For Information on our employees benefits please visit our benefits website at: https://www.chicago.gov/city/en/depts/fin/benefits-office.html For Information on our salary and title structure visit our classifications website at: https://www.chicago.gov/content/dam/city/depts/dhr/supp_info/JobClassification/2025_Classification_and_Pay_Plan.pdf APPLICATION EVALUATION: Initial evaluation will be based on information provided on the application and the documents submitted.
