Join the HJF Team! HJF is seeking a Speech Language Pathologist II to conduct data collection and intervention for a feasibility study. The SLP II will assist with study recruitment, screening, and enrollment of participants for the study; collect baseline and follow-up data; perform data entry; conduct qualitative research interviews; manage research data; attend research team meetings; and assist with data analysis and report writing. This role will implement the standardized intervention as outlined in the approved research protocol in accordance with Institutional Research Board. Additionally, this role may support treatment and ongoing research evaluating aimed at decreasing symptoms of cognitive dysfunction among patients with a history of mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI) and related psychological issues. This position will be in support of a feasibility study at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System in Palo Alto, California. The aim of the clinical trial is to standardize a Music Therapy and Speech-Language Pathology Co-Treatment for Military-Connected Populations with TBI.

Responsibilities
- This fully licensed and independent Speech-Language Pathologist manages all aspects of diagnostic assessments, evaluations, and therapeutic/rehabilitative services for speech, language, voice, fluency, cognition, and swallowing disorders. They possess expert knowledge and skill in applying diverse speech-language pathology theories, principles, and methodologies to a wide range of populations. This includes responsibility for the accuracy of assessments, reporting findings to interdisciplinary team members, and contributing to diagnostic and clinical judgments through group intervention, observation, consultation, and utilization of contemporary assessment procedures and techniques.
- Recruits, screens, and enrolls participants for the specific research protocol. Tracks enrollment and assessment completion metrics.
- Collects baseline and follow up data, ensuring validity, accuracy, and compliance with quality assurance requirements.
- Performs data entry into electronic data capture system.
- Collection of heart rate variability data utilizing wearable devices and interpreting relevant output.
- Working knowledge of auditory processing dysfunction in adults.
- Administration and scoring of the SCAN3 assessment.
- Collects, tracks, and maintains regulatory documentation for study compliance.
- With oversight from the lead study coordinator, ensures that research records, data, and relevant study materials are updated, stored, secured properly, and properly maintained, as outlined in the research protocol.
- Conducts semi-structured interviews, focus groups, schedules treatment and outcome assessment sessions, assists with coding of qualitative data.
- With oversight from the lead study coordinator, ensures that any adverse events have been documented and forwarded to the appropriate principal investigator.
- Performs administrative duties such as: assist with writing of study reports, scientific literature searches, manuscripts and presenting studies; develop data collection packets; assist research team with preparing session-related materials; and provide data tracking updates for weekly study meetings.
- May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the lead study coordinator and supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training and meetings relevant to the research project.
- Professional Development & Support: Attend training for delivering study treatment. Attend, participate and may lead interdisciplinary meetings. May contribute to publications such as manuscripts, abstracts, posters and presentations. For professional growth, keep abreast of current literature in the field of speech language pathology (i.e. as it relates to cognitive and concomitant speech deficits resulting from brain injury). Maintain a high level of professional competence including attending conferences and participating in other activities for professional growth.
Supervisory Controls The incumbent is under the general supervision of lead study coordinator and supervisor at HJF, working in collaboration with the site Program Director and Site Speech discipline leadership.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Master's Degree (MA, MS, MCD) in Speech-Language Pathology
- Minimum of 3-5 years experience required
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Maintain current certification of Clinical Competency in speech-language pathology (CCC-SLP) from ASHA or state licensure.
- Keep all certifications current to include Basic Life Support, HIPAA, and any other certifications required by the facility.
- Exposure to and familiarity with military culture and delivery of healthcare at a Military Treatment Facility (MTF) or Veterans Affairs (VA) Hospital.
- Strong Analytical/Technical Skills: Strong knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the speech/swallowing mechanisms, speech and language development, various assessment tools, evaluation and treatment protocols and therapeutic techniques and procedures/techniques necessary for performing research tasks.
- Working knowledge of all applicable federal and military regulations regarding the use of human and animal subjects in research (e.g.: 21 CFR 50, 21 CFR 56, 21 CFR 312, 21 CFR 314,45 CFR 46, FDA Form 1571, and FDA Form 1572).
- Must be familiar with Institutional Review Board (IRB) activities and Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) actions.
- Must be able to work independently to meet deadlines.
- Ability to write progress reports in a clear and concise manner.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to establish goals and agendas.
- Meets the needs of customers while supporting the medical center and service missions. Consistently communicates and treats customers (patients, visitors, volunteers, and all medical center staff) in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner. Provides the customer with consistent information according to established policies and procedures. Handles conflict and problems in dealing with the customer constructively and appropriately.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a T1/Public Trust background check and PIV card.
- Protects printed and electronic files containing sensitive data in accordance with the provisions of the Privacy Act of 1974 and other applicable laws, regulations, statuses and medical center policy. Protects the data from unauthorized release or from loss, alteration, or unauthorized deletion. Follows applicable regulations and instructions regarding access to computerized files, release of access codes, etc. Uses word processing software to execute several office automations functions such as storing and retrieving electronic documents and files, activating printers; inserting and deleting text, formatting letters, reports, and memoranda; and transmitting and receiving email.
- Will adhere to departmental, medical center, National Offices, CARF, The Joint Commission, and other applicable guidelines and regulatory bodies.

Work Environment
- This position will take place primarily in an office setting.
