Norton Rose Fulbright is seeking a Privacy Counsel with at least 3-7 years of experience to join our U.S. Data Protection, Privacy, and Cybersecurity practice. This role is primarily privacy-focused, advising clients on U.S. state and federal privacy laws (CCPA/CPRA, HIPAA, COPPA, TCPA, FTC Act) as well as GDPR and cross-border data issues.

The ideal candidate will have experience counseling clients on privacy compliance programs, data governance, vendor and consumer contracts, and regulatory investigations. Exposure to incident response and broader cyber risk management is a plus, but the focus of the role is on proactive privacy counseling. Law firm experience is preferred.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Advise clients across sectors on compliance with global and U.S. privacy laws and frameworks, including:

    • GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, HIPAA, COPPA, TCPA, the FTC Act, and emerging U.S. state privacy laws

  • Develop, implement, and assess privacy compliance programs, data handling practices, and risk mitigation strategies

  • Counsel on cross-border data transfers, data localization laws, and international data flows

  • Advise on privacy aspects of digital products, advertising, AI, big data, and emerging technologies

  • Draft and negotiate data protection agreements, data sharing arrangements, and vendor contracts

  • Provide guidance on privacy policies, consent frameworks, and consumer rights management

  • Support M&A and other corporate transactions through privacy due diligence and risk assessments

  • Assist with regulatory investigations, enforcement actions, and consumer complaints involving data use and privacy practices

  • Contribute to privacy readiness efforts (including U.S. state law compliance programs and global harmonization strategies)

  • Support incident response and regulatory notifications in collaboration with forensic and breach response teams

  • Participate in privacy and cybersecurity tabletop exercises, and assist with the review of incident response plans

  • Advise on data governance, security policies, and enterprise risk management from a privacy perspective

Qualifications:

  • 3-7 years of experience focused on privacy law

  • Strong knowledge of U.S. federal and state privacy laws; experience with GDPR and international frameworks preferred

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; client-facing experience required

  • Ability to manage complex matters independently and collaborate with cross-functional teams and outside vendors

  • CIPP/US, CIPT, or other privacy certification is a plus

Law firm experience preferred; in-house experience considered with appropriate depth of work

Compensation
Employees are entitled to compensation commensurate with skill and experience.The full time base annual salary for this position in the Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, New York City and San Francisco market is expected to range between $250,000 - $450,000.This range represents the firm's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting for a position in Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, New York City and San Francisco. Salaries in other markets will vary depending on market data. Bonus opportunities are non-guaranteed and are dependent upon individual and firm performance.
