Job Purpose
The Student Success Programs Specialist will lead initiatives aimed at improving student retention and graduation rates, with a primary focus on supporting students in the First Year Impact and Academic Probation programs. This role involves providing proactive advising, coordinating support services, and implementing success strategies for at-risk student populations. The specialist performs essential support services for student success initiatives, may assist across multiple programs or departments, and is responsible for preparing reports and related documentation. They work closely with various campus partners to ensure students receive the academic and personal support needed to be successful.

In addition, the specialist supports all Student Success Programming in collaboration with the Associate Director of Student Success Programs, playing a vital role in coordinating logistics, tracking timelines, and maintaining momentum on a variety of student-centered initiatives. This position requires strong organizational skills, clear communication, and the ability to balance collaboration with independent work in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor's degree and at least 2 years of related experience with student services in a higher education setting. Master's degree in counseling, education, or related field is preferred. Familiarity with Banner, Maxient and with early alert/incident reporting systems preferred. Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education are encouraged to apply.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability to provide supportive counseling and action-oriented strategies for a wide range of student problems in a fast paced, student-centered office setting. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, college administration, faculty, and staff. Ability to plan, organize and implement special projects on behalf of the department. Ability to work independently while aligning daily efforts with broader departmental goals.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to collect, analyze and interpret data to assess the efficacy of current programs and services. Must have knowledge of and the ability to interpret and communicate College of Charleston policies and procedures. Must be familiar with Microsoft Programs (Outlook Calendar, Word, Excel, Power Point, and Publisher) and willing and able to learn other database systems, including Banner, Appointment Manager, Maxient and Advise CRM.
Additional Comments Regarding Position
May be required to work some weekends, early mornings or evening hours during critical periods. Typical hours Monday through Friday are 8:30am - 5:00pm.

Refers students to the appropriate services available at the College of Charleston and elsewhere when appropriate. Follows up with students and service providers to ensure resolution. Manages Early Alert measures and strategies implemented by the department. This includes managing the 'Faculty/Staff Assisting Students in Trouble' (F.A.S.T.) program. Investigates, addresses &/or delegates referrals from faculty/staff related to academic concerns.

Supports Student Success Programs within the Academic Success and Retention Office (First Year Impact Program, and Academic Probation) by meeting with caseload of students weekly, or as needed based on referral or reported concerns. Create and lead additional interventions to support at-risk student populations.

Evaluate and track Student Success Program participant progress through the review of weekly note submissions from Peer Educators ( ASRO Mentors and/or PAC's) and program engagement data. Monitor task timelines to ensure timely completion of programming goals. Engage in proactive outreach to program participants at key points of the semester. Support Associate Director of Student Success Programs in execution of all program initiatives.

Assists in the design, development, implementation and assessment of departmental programs and strategies. Works to ensure the Academic Success and Retention Office is supporting the goals of the Office for Student Success and the goals and strategies of the College of Charleston Strategic Plan. Ensures conformance with FERPA and other federal, state and institutional guidelines.
