Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity for a Manager, Internal Communication at UL Research Institutes and UL Standards & Engagement, based in our Evanston, Illinois office.

The Manager, Internal Communication, will lead the ULRI-ULSE internal communications planning and execution with a strong emphasis on driving awareness of the organization's mission, vision, and values, and promoting employee engagement and a positive culture. The Internal Communications Manager leads a team and works closely with various departments to create and execute communications strategies that keep our employees informed, motivated, and aligned with our organization's goals. The position reports to both the Chief HR Officer, who guides employee engagement strategies, and the VP of Marketing & Communications, who provides expertise on communication best practices, tools, resources, and career development.

What you'll learn and achieve:

As the Manager, Internal Communication, you will play a key role in the rapid growth of UL as you:

  • Enhance and execute a comprehensive internal communications plan that aligns with organizational goals and supports a collaborative culture.

  • Design and manage communication campaigns that promote employee engagement, reinforce organizational values, and celebrate successes.

  • Collaborate with the CHRO and VP of Marketing & Communications to ensure communication strategies are consistent with our brand and culture.

  • Work closely with other departments to ensure that internal communications support their objectives.

  • Develop, edit, and manage the production of engaging content and communication events (e.g., Townhalls, webinars) that resonate with various employee audiences.

  • Ensure all internal communications are clear, consistent, and aligned with our organizational voice and tone.

  • Oversee a team of communications professionals, providing guidance, mentorship, and professional development opportunities.

  • Ensure the team effectively manages internal communication channels, including intranet, email newsletters, internal social media, and other platforms.

  • Partner with HR to develop and promote initiatives that enhance employee engagement, such as recognition programs, and employee feedback mechanisms.

  • Communicate key HR and other organizational initiatives, policies, and updates clearly and effectively across the organization.

  • Collaborate with CHRO and VP of Marketing & Communications on the development and launch of employment brand initiatives for employees and the external market.

  • Foster a sense of community and inclusion by creating opportunities for employee participation and dialogue.

  • Establish metrics to assess the effectiveness of internal communication strategies and initiatives.

  • Regularly report on engagement metrics and employee feedback to refine and improve communication practices.

  • Collaborate on other departments or organizational initiatives as required.

Professional education and experience requirements for the role include:

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Human Resources, or a related field. A master's degree is a plus.

  • At least 7 years of experience in marketing or communications, with at least 3 years of experience in employee engagement, or related communications roles, preferably within a nonprofit organization.

  • Experience leading a team and managing cross-departmental projects.

  • Experience working with and executing communications strategies in a complex organizational structure.

  • Proficiency in communication tools and platforms, including intranets, email marketing software, and social media channels.
