Essential Job Functions
The Reich College of Education ( RCOE) is the designated professional educator preparation unit at Appalachian State University. The College offers a broad range of comprehensive degree programs: Baccalaureate, Masters, Specialist and Doctoral levels as well as programs leading to certificates and licensure. The College seeks to provide a well-balanced program of classroom and clinical experiences.
The Clinical Internship Specialist position supports the mission of the RCOE through the Office of Field Experience and has the responsibility of securing field placements for methods-based internships and clinical Internships for teacher preparation. This position reports to the Director of Clinical Education.

Job responsibilities and duties include:

  • collecting and organizing all applications for clinical Internships, assisting with informational meetings, collecting placement recommendations from departments, and combining them with student data and personal preferences to assist in determining the potential school district placement and working with the Director of Clinical Education to secure placements.
  • consulting with Student Health Services to determine current protocols for health screenings required for Clinical Internships
  • completing the Dean's Recommendations for Employment forms to employ University Field Supervisors and distributing the Clinical Interns among them for placement in consultation with the Director of Clinical Education
  • communicating placement information to all students as well as district offices, and providing background check results to the school district offices
  • notifying all host teachers, principals and supervisors of placement decisions
  • keeping all undergraduate program directors informed of their students' placements
  • checking for course deficiencies, removing any students who do not qualify for the clinical internship, and notifying schools and supervisors
  • assisting with the University Field Supervisor opening and closing meetings and all Clinical Internship Seminars and Regional meetings
  • creating and distributing certificates of appreciation and processing stipends for all host teachers in the public schools
  • assisting the Director of Clinical Education and Associate Dean of Academic Partnerships as needed with field experience-related initiatives (i.e., MOUs, criminal background checks, asulearn projects, weekly digests)
  • processing travel authorizations and all travel reimbursements for supervisors, faculty, and academic content consultants for all site visits
  • managing and reconciling three budget funds, monthly, for the Office of Field Experiences and reconciling a purchasing card account
  • securing and distributing edTPA vouchers to university supervisors
  • compiling student teacher/program/supervisor/school/district/host teacher statistics for reporting purposes, each semester
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Clinical Education

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position

  • Knowledge of North Carolina policies and procedures related Clinical Internships including program policies and procedures as related to Clinical Internships and field placements.
  • Ability to apply and interpret policies for placing interns in school districts for field experiences.
  • Knowledge of new practices, state laws, policies and procedures with clinical internships.
  • Ability to make recommendations and implement improvements or necessary changes to policies, procedures and/or program(s) related to Clinical Internships in collaboration with the Director of Clinical Education.
  • Administer and manage the field placements of methods course internships and clinical interns.
  • Ability to ensure clinical internship accountability.
  • Ability to define scope, goals, tasks, deliverables, timelines, tools, and resources needed each semester to place 200-400 Clinical Interns.
  • Ability to assess the needs of the placement process and other related needs that arise.
  • Determine any gaps, and recommend changes in procedures, workflow and work assignments to improve efficiency and effectiveness in the performance of students and university field supervisors.
  • Develop and monitor Clinical Internship databases including placement sites, principals, teachers and other information as needed.
  • Assists Associate Dean and Director of Clinical Education with data for various reports for the Department of Public Instruction.
  • Ability to analyze business operations and financial statements for the three Office of Field Experiences budget assigned to this position.
  • Ability to develop initiatives to meet field experience-related needs and objectives.
  • Ability to assess and resolve unprecedented problems that require research and review of policy and procedures in the Office of Field Experience and the ability to resolve problems or compliance issues in consultation with the Director of Clinical Education.
  • Ability to conduct informational meetings, advise and assist students preparing for Clinical Internships.
  • Ability to share knowledge and apply critical thinking processes to problem solve.
  • Ability to promote the use of best practices to achieve mutually agreeable outcomes in the resolution of issues as needed in consultation with the Director of Clinical Education.
  • Ability to determine and document a course of action to address complex, ambiguous or unique operational and/or programmatic issues in securing clinical internships.
  • Ability to maintain and enhance professional relationships to increase credibility for building support and reaching consensus when explaining and interpreting program policies and procedures within the operations of Clinical Internships.
  • Ability to promote and market field experiences and communicate to students, teachers, principals, Human Resource Directors, and others the needs and beneficial outcomes of the program.
  • Provide consultation on issues and requests from Clinical Interns, University Field Supervisors and Program Directors related to field placements and supervision.
  • Consult with Associate Dean and Director of Clinical Education to discuss alternative solutions.
  • Assists in developing and implementing strategies for continuous improvement in Clinical Internships and related work.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master level degree in education related field
  • Experience in P-12 education
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
