Who we are and what we do:

The Division of Insurance in the Department of Commerce and Insurance is responsible for direct regulation of the over 60 insurance companies domiciled in Tennessee as well as providing oversight for the over 2,000 insurance companies that operate here. Our work ensures that the Department is able protect Tennesseans and empower professionals.

How you make a difference in this role:

Actuarial science is the core of how insurance products work. You will review rate filings, including complicated and proprietary filings, for compliance with Tennessee statute and ultimately determining that no product with sold with a rate that is inadequate, excessive, or unfairly discriminatory.

Job Overview:

Performs moderately complex actuarial work. Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Employees at this level may work more independently than those at the previous level and may routinely assist other staff in performing higher-level work

Key Responsibilities:

Conducts actuarial examinations and research assignments. Reviews contracts for propriety and actuarial soundness. Reviews rate filings. Reviews risk-rating systems. Reviews rate-making data for accuracy and compliance with approved statistical plans. Makes recommendations related to all lines of insurance, annuity reserves, regulated rates, and other actuarial matters. Monitors the financial aspects of insured contracts, including reserves, premium payments, and interest credits. Provides technical assistance and advice on actuarial matters. Prepare and present technical reports and evidence at hearings.

Minimum Qualifications:

A designation from the Society of Actuaries (SOA), the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS), or the American Society of Pension Professionals and Actuaries (ASPPA). Five years of experience.
