To provide skilled dental treatment in a conventional, direct, and simple manner: patient comfort, proper oral hygiene, treatment, and preventative care management. This includes examining the patient and removing deposits and stains from teeth and dental implants. It also includes the application of localized medications and fluoride and processing dental radiographs for periodontic patients. A dental hygienist provides educational functions for patients, dental students, residents, and services in clinical duties.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Examines teeth and surrounding tissues for lesions, disease, and other abnormal conditions by charting, probing, and use of intra-oral camera and digital x-rays.
  • Removes hard/soft deposits and stains from teeth by ultrasonic scalers and hand instruments.
  • Instructs and advises patients on oral hygiene care and residents on patient treatments in regard to oral hygiene care.
  • Works on the recall system administratively and schedules patients who are due/overdue for their prophylaxis appointments.
  • Using digital x-ray equipment to take dental radiographs: intraorals, panoramic, full mouth series and CT scans.
  • Provide demonstrations and guidance on periodontal instrumentation techniques to residents
  • Clinical and hands-on didactic instruction in non-surgical periodontal therapy in the pre-doctoral program
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


  • Minimum Qualifications Required:

    1. Current/valid licensure as a Dental Hygienist in the State of Illinois.
    2. Current/ valid CPR Certification.
    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Two years of experience.
    • Skills to obtain and record basic medical and dental histories and information and updates patient appointment records.
    • Demonstrated ability to communicate and work effectively with faculty, students, staff, and patients.
    • Ability of developing and maintaining an effective recall program and ability to maintain a productive work environment typical of private practice.
    • Local anesthesia and Nitrous Oxide certification.
    • Knowledge of instruments and aseptic techniques and sterilization procedures, and knowledge of clinical concepts in a private institution and/or dental institution required. Intermediate level of experience with computer software such as Excel, Word, and electronic health records (EHR).
