Postdoctoral Scholar

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
United States, California, Berkeley
1 Cyclotron Road (Show on map)
May 03, 2025

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's (LBNL) Accelerator Technology & Applied Physics (ATAP) Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Scholar to work in the ALS Accelerator Physics Program (ALS AP).

The position requires engagement in pioneering research at the crossroads of machine learning and accelerator physics, aimed at improving the performance and capabilities of our light source facility. Modern complex accelerators at large-scale scientific user facilities face increasing challenges as new machines push the boundaries of technology in the pursuit of higher performance. Working with a team of accelerator physicists and engineers, the position requires tackling these challenges by applying machine learning techniques to accelerator tuning and control. You will study beam-based diagnostics to optimize machine performance as well as explore and develop advanced control methods for injectors and storage rings. Additionally, the position requires using ML methods to analyze operational data and develop advanced automated machine startup and commissioning tools.

What You Will Do:

  • Conduct pioneering research in the development and application of machine learning algorithms for accelerator physics.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams of scientists and engineers to address complex challenges in accelerator design, optimization, and operation.
  • Support the commissioning of the ALS accelerator upgrade, contributing to the integration and optimization of new subsystems and technologies.
  • Communicate research findings through peer-reviewed publications, conferences, and seminars.

What is Required:

  • Ph.D. in Computer Science, Accelerator Physics, Applied Mathematics, Engineering, or a related field, awarded within the last 5 years.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to effectively write scientific reports and papers, present research findings at conferences and seminars, and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and in a team environment.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Hands-on experience with particle accelerators, or experience with computational aspects of accelerator modeling and control.
  • Strong theoretical and practical expertise in machine learning, particularly but not limited to deep learning techniques.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and deploying machine learning models in interdisciplinary research settings.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, with experience in using machine learning libraries and frameworks.
  • Experience with high-performance computing.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time, 2-year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
  • The monthly salary range for this position is $ 5,562 - $9,136 and is expected to start at $7,716 or above. Postdoctoral positions are paid on a step schedule per union contract and salaries will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. Each step represents one full year of completed post-Ph.D. postdoctoral experience.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. Starting May 7, a REAL ID or other acceptable form of identification is required to access Berkeley Lab sites (for more information click here).
