Position Description:

The Department of Biology is searching for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor position to teach two non-majors Biology courses each semester: Human Biology for Non-Majors (BIOL: 1140) and Human Biology for Health Professionals (BIOL: 1141). This position will begin in August 2025 and terminate in May 2026. We are seeking candidates who are strongly committed to teaching in a liberal arts college environment and have a demonstrated record of teaching excellence. Both courses are 4-credit courses that survey fundamental biological principles ranging from the cellular and molecular basis of life to the evolutionary and ecological processes that sustain life on the planet.

The courses consist of both lecture and lab components. The person appointed to this position will have responsibility for the lecture sections of both courses and will serve in a supervisory role for teaching assistants in the laboratories. Activities in the laboratory include:





  • Use of the Microscope
  • Cell Structure & Function
  • Cells and Tissues
  • DNA, Chromosomes, Mitosis
  • Vertebrate Anatomy
  • Heart, Circulations and Oxygen Consumption
  • Enzymes, Digestion, Hydrolysis
  • Sensory Perception in Humans
  • Statistical Evaluation of Data
  • Embryonic Development
  • Homology and Adaptation

Education Requirement:


  • Ph.D. or other terminal degree in the biological or health sciences awarded by the start date.


Required Qualifications:


  • Demonstrated instructional experience in college-level introductory biology
  • Evidence of teaching excellence through student and/or peer evaluations


Desirable Qualifications:


  • Experience teaching in large introductory courses
  • Experience in lecture and laboratory development for introductory biology courses
  • Implementation of evidence-based teaching pedagogies that promote student learning
  • Using software platforms such as Canvas and TopHat (or similar software)
  • Contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment
